Identification Of Camphor And Menthol Using Gas Chromatography: Lab Report
CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

4.1 Identification of camphor and menthol using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC – MS)
In this study, the presence of menthol and camphor were determined from 5 different locally produced medicinal topical ointment samples. Sample of Vick® VapoRub® and Hurix’s Massage Balm were purchased from local pharmacies, Bunga Cengkih Balm and Serai Balm samples were purchased from the grocery shop. Buah Pala Balm sample was purchased from the night market. Sample of Serai and Buah Pala both do not have the meditag of hologram which indicates that they are not certified by the MOH.

For identification of menthol and camphor in the samples, mass spectrometry (MS) was used due to its ability to measure

All the samples of topical ointments used in this study gave warming and cooling effect when applied on the skin since they are used to treat pains of muscles, joints or spine. According to Koprowksi et al. (2014), the chemicals that responsible to give the effect of warming and cooling feeling are camphor and menthol, respectively. Therefore, the absence of these two compounds in the samples indicates that the manufacturers have added other compounds that will give the warming and cooling effects on the skin. Table 4.1 shows the retention time, quality and peak area of camphor and menthol in each …show more content…
In Figure 4.1, it can be seen that both camphor and menthol were detected in sample of Vicks ® VapoRub ® at retention time of 14.121 min and 14.26 min, respectively. The quality of camphor and menthol were found to be high with the value of 91 and 97, respectively. The area for camphor was 3.0282 x 10 8 and 2.368 x 10 8 for menthol. Based on the presence of camphor and menthol, it can be postulated that these two compounds are responsible for the effect of warming and cooling when it was applied on the skin.

Figure 4.1 GC - MS chromatogram for sample of Vicks ® VapoRub®.
Figure 4.2 and Figure 4.3 show the chromatogram for sample of Hurix’s Massage Balm and Serai Balm, respectively. Camphor and menthol have been detected in both samples. The peak of camphor compound is at retention time of 14.104 min for Hurix’s Massage Balm sample and Serai Balm sample is at 14.129 min. Meanwhile, the peak of menthol compound for Hurix’s Massage Balm sample is at 14.485 min and 14.405 min for Serai Balm

The purpose of this lab was to obtain a pure sample of clove oil from ground cloves using steam distillation, perform infrared spectroscopy on the sample, and analyze the IR to identify the major constituent in the clove oil. The first day the clove oil was removed from the ground cloves into an aqueous solution then removed from the water using DCM. The sample was left in a sealed container for one week and then isolated by drying the sample and removing the DCM. After the clove oil was isolated it was analyzed using IR spectroscopy.…

Another error occurred when some of the product was dropped onto the lab…

Herbal medicine is the most primitive traditional approach to the treatment of diseases and ailments. It is called herbal medicine because it involves the use of plants or plant parts. There is no doubt that herbal medicines provided the first basis for therapeutics before the development or advent of orthodox medicine. Despite the fact that, over the years, chemists have synthesized a large number of chemical substances, many of which have proved useful in modern therapeutics, plants still remain potential sources of useful products. Although the medicine prescribed may contain only one single active item, it is often a mixture of many components. Thousands of herbal medicines are used by peoples from every culture and various indigenous medicines are gradually being introduced into modern therapeutics. In developing countries about 80% of the people, especially the rural population, rely on traditional medical remedies for their health care needs. In developed countries, there has been a resurgence of interest in herbal medicines due, to a large extent, on the preference of many consumers for products of natural origin. In addition, manufactured herbal medicines from their countries of origin often follow in the wake of migrants from countries where traditional medicines play an important role. It is important however, to distinguish between herbal medicine supplied by a “qualified” medical practitioner as a result of a consultation and those herbal remedies (in the form of “teas”) freely available to the public for self-medication.…

In line with this, since guava is one of the distributed fruit tree crop in the tropics like the Philippines, the researchers would like to find out if the guava plant is feasible enough as a main ingredient of lotion. If ever successful, this would serve as a milestone for the Filipinos to start a business and have a source of income. The experiment was conducted by having the guavas put in boiled water for five minutes, peeled and put into the blender. Coconut oil was emulsified with beeswax later on mixed with the guava puree together with the preferred scented oil. This lotion was presented and had it surveyed to twelve different people. To know if it reaches the standard, the researchers also surveyed another twelve people to use a commercialized lotion on their skins. With the results averaging 4.02 for the guava lotion and 4.54 for the commercial lotion, we can say that guava is a viable main ingredient of a scrub lotion.…

Vegetable oils like coconut oil and safflower oil traditionally used in different parts of the country due to their proximity to farm growth centres, are products where traditional management has been very successful. Coconut oil has been essentially an oil used for consumption mainly in Kerala and neighbouring areas in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Keralites living in foreign countries specially, the Gulf and the Middle East also consume this product practically every day. Similarly, safflower oil has been in use mostly in western and central India as these areas cultivate sunflower farms. Coconut oil has been one of the main ingredients in Ayurvedic preparations for skin care and related products, prescribed by Ayurveda doctors in some parts of the country, specially Kerala. The skin nourishing qualities of coconut oil is a well known fact and to develop that concept into a number of hygiene and cosmetic products needed a well thought out strategy. Perhaps, it is this deliberate policy of converting ordinary products into branded products by value addition or even value creation has been the business model for Marico.…
