In 2006, al Qaeda was rebranded ISIS by the Egyptian Abu Ayyub al-Masri who became the new leader (Hanna 1). Isis was founded in 1999 by Jordanian radical Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Following the invasion in Iraq in 2003, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his group of militia, who will later be known as Isis, got plenty of notoriety in the early stages of the war in Iraq for the suicide attacks on Shia Islamic mosques, civilians, Italian soldiers fighting with the US, and Iraqi institutions. In October 2004, Al-Zarqawi's group officially pledged allegiance to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda. They then changed their name to what’s known as al-Qaeda in Iraq. Attacks by the group on civilians, Iraqi government and security forces, foreign diplomats and soldiers, and American convoys continued with roughly the same intensity. A letter sent from Al-Qaeda…

Incited by religious fanatics, trained and financed by Osama Bin Laden’s Al Qaeda terrorist network, they killed three-thousand innocent people on 9/11 and triggered an escalating cycle of violence which has taken the lives of tens of thousands of other innocent people, and has made another 9/11 virtually inevitable. Terrorism is a broad ideology that is so intertwined in the Middle East with complex and historic religious conflicts and political associations that any attempt made by a Western power to ham-fistedly destroy it with military force will ultimately fail and stir up further resentment in the region. The ending of the Cold War was made possible through the recognition of mutual interests of state actors, yet the Salafism of al-Qaeda and ISIS, together with the rightful unwillingness of the U.S. and its allies to negotiate with unlawful terrorist organisations make a similar solution unworkable in the present…

In previous decades, terrorism has been on the rise, and it has only continued to grow since the attacks of September 11th. In 2014, according to The Economist Magazine, over 30 million people were killed worldwide due to terrorist attacks (Daily Chart, 2015). This number is more than double the number of deaths from the previous year. In addition, the U.S. Department of State has over 60 different organizations listed as active terrorist organizations worldwide (Foreign Terrorist Organization, n.d.). In order for an organization to be deemed a “terrorist” organization by the U.S. Department of State, they must not only be a foreign organization, but they must be involved with the execution or planning of activities that have a direct effect on U.S. nationals or U.S. national security (Foreign Terrorist Organization, n.d.). With this threat being the main concentration of the United States over the last decade and a half, and still growing, it is easy to see why this is an area that the United States IC will continue to keep its center of attention on. What does make this more difficult, is the associated…
