Games
In Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card, games are a major theme. Every piece of important information is seen through the use of games. Ender usually only sees the games as games, considering he wins most of them, but in his final game he realizes its true meaning too late. The line between reality and what is a game is blurred. The first game is “buggers and astronauts,” a game all kids play including Ender and Peter. In Ender’s case though the game is much more than it seems, because Peter actually hates Ender, and he abuses Ender during the game. Ender never wins this game in particular. It is one of the only games he is not successful in. Most likely because by counteracting was Peter is doing he would be turning into Peter, his worst fear. The second game Ender faces appears in two different forms. The first, a mind game, a game that even its inventors don’t fully understand, and one that effects Ender’s life directly. By playing this game, Ender comes to terms with the new way of life he lives, and it is through the images in the game the buggers proceed to communicate with Ender. The second is a war game in the battle room. One’s role and how they perform in these games is everything to the children. Their lives revolve around playing games, and so the meaning of the word itself shifts from a voluntary fun experience to a necessary aspect of life. The third and final game Ender plays is the most important of all. This occurs when Ender is named commander of the Third Invasion. By participating in these games Ender’s health declines, he is unable to sleep or eat and is forced to be strict with the ones he cares for. Ender only destroys the buggers to end what seemed like a game, when in reality if he had known it wasn’t a game he would have never participated. For the playing of the game can have a profound impact on life, and sometimes the games itself is reality.

In Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game, the “mind game” is a constantly changing computer game made for the students and is used by the commanders of the battle school as a tool to monitor and analyze how the students are feeling. Ender Wiggin becomes increasingly obsessed with the game, specifically after he becomes stuck at the “Giant’s Drink”. At this point, the game seems to hit a dead end, with none of the options for the player to take being the right one and all of them ending in their “death”. The game would then reset itself so that the player might try again, and fail again. The Giant’s Drink is symbolic to many parts of Ender’s life; he sees, in the battle school, that following orders will barely…

His sister, Valentine, was needed to convince him that he needed to reenlist and save the human population from the buggers (alien species). After his conversation with his sister Ender moves on to command school where he prepares to become the battle commander of the entire International Fleet. He trains with the great Mazer Rackham who had won the second invasion for the humans. Some of Enders close friends from battle school become his platoon leaders and help him win almost all of his battles. After much training Ender is faced with a final test in which he faces an almost unbeatable enemy where he only won by completely destroying their home planet and queens/controllers. It is then revealed to Ender that his training battles had not been training, it had been him facing a real enemy which he had destroyed. Although Ender is a hero, he feels horrible and is relieved that he finds a bugger egg with which he could repopulate the bugger race. As we read the book and watched the movie I believe that the book is better than the movie for many reasons. Some of these reasons include character development, details, and an overall better timing of…

For example, recall when Ender plays the game and discovers a park full of wolf children (in Chapter 7)? And when he tries to use the playground, Ender's character fails. Surely this game seems to tell us that Ender a) can not play children's games and b) can not play with children. But this is just a game, it's not Ender's true life, so you might be wondering why this scene is important.…

Games people play was actually I really awesome book. I enjoyed reading it very much. I totally now realized now that people do need interaction with others. I never noticed that most depressed people are the way they are because they don’t have enough physical interaction. I also never noticed how people will play games. You aren’t always aware that you are doing it. Like when you play poker. You have a real payoff but you hide your motivations to get there. What I also learned was that within each person were three selves or “ego states”. Which were, child, adult and parent. They are actually similar to Freud’s (super ego)Parent (ego)adult and (id)child .…

Human experiences are organized in a particular way when it comes to games and play. This is a starting point that underlines the particularity of play experiences and is closely related to a concept first introduced in Johan Huizinga´s work Homo Ludens; a study of the play-element in culture (1938/1955) known as the “magic circle”, which was later stablished as the key concept to address the boundaries that separate games from the “ordinary life.”…

I believe that playing is a useful way to help children know the world, to understand the new things around them, and to expand their knowledge. In “The Nature of Children 's Play,” written by David Fernie (1996) said that “in play, children expand their understanding of themselves and others, their knowledge of the physical world, and their ability to communicate with peers and adults.” When I was a child, I liked to play checkers with my father. At first, I only considered offensive moves, and I always lost the game; however, after several times, I started to observe how my father played the game, and I started to imitate the way that my father played. Now, I know I must consider both offensive alternatives and the need for defense, so I can win the game. Fernie (1996) separated children into two groups. One is younger than five years old; the other is older than five years old. He argued that younger children are interested in informal games, and older children are more logical and socialized ways of thinking in play formal games. He only mentioned that it is possible to make two different age groups to play together. But, due to my own experiences, I prefer to play game with someone older than me. I think play with peers can help children enhance their relationships; whereas, playing with older children can improve children’s knowledge and…
