In “Hunter Safety” by Jeffrey Johnson I believe that the story has a few themes/lessons. Evidence. Explain. I believe that a theme/ lesson of the story could be that wanting something is different than needing something.…
In the readings for this week Sara Ahmed discusses how to build a “killjoy survival kit” as well as the significance of a “killjoy manifesto”. The purpose of a killjoy manifesto is to point out what is already present in society. The reason why the burden falls on the feminist is because of the power struggle between the people who built the institutions and are consequently impervious to them and those who want to expose these institution, the feminist killjoy. Throughout this book the author uses the term “killjoy” to describe the sentiment a person feels when they expose barriers, violence and inequality to the people around them. Yet, what struck me the most in this reading was the topic of happiness. A survival kit is necessary because…
“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a story about a hunter, Rainsford, who finds a deserted island, where he meets General Zaroff who too shares an interest in hunting. On this island, General Zaroff hunts humans that have had the misfortune to end up on his island. Although Zaroff lives in a very civilized home with electricity and fancy food, Zaroff himself is a very uncivilized being. In the story, General Zaroff is explaining to Rainsford why he hunts humans. “...If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth...a thoroughbred horse or hound is worth more than the score of them.” (Connell, 64). Zaroff is saying that it is okay to hunt people if you are better than them. He does not value human life. This makes…
When it comes down to your morals, how far would you go to survive? Morals are something you live by and can be good or bad, but everybody has them. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the main character Sanger Rainsford is a dynamic character who is forced to change his own beliefs through relationship, conflict, and survival.…
Iconic African species are declining at a startling speed because of unsustainable hunting. Consider the African lion for example. Their numbers have reduced from approximately 450,000 in the 1940s to 200,000. Furthermore Oxford University research shows that by 2035, the number of lions will likely be decreased by a further 50%. Trophy hunters contribute to this decline by killing around 105,000 animals every year. the original intention of trophy hunters was to control healthy populations of individual species. Numbers were managed under the guise of culling. However, the trophy hunters never stopped hunting even when healthy numbers were achieved, and the trophy hunting has become a status symbol for the wealthy, especially in Asia.…
In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford changes his entire philosophy about hunting. For example, when Whitney disagreed with him about jaguars he said, “You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”(Connell). Rainsford believes animals have no understanding of what is happening, therefore, it’s okay to hunt them. He doesn’t care if they feel pain or understand death and shows no remorse. In addition, when General Zaroff set the hounds to get Rainsford, he “knew now how an animal at bay feels” (Connell). Rainsford has to run away, set traps, and continuously risk his life to have a better chance at surviving. He felt the way animals do when they are being hunted and finally understood…
“You were surprised that I recognized your name, You see, I read all books on hunting published in English, French, and Russian.”(p.4, Richard Connell) This use of direct characterization shows that Rainsford is a smart, educated man, because he has written a known book about hunting. In the story Rainsford also says “Thank you, I’m a hunter, not a murderer.”(p.6, Richard Connell) This shows the reader that Rainsford knows what’s right from wrong, and how humans should be treated, rather than how Zaroff treats the men that cross his path.…
Picture yourself on the edge of a cliff and there are people with weapons closing in on you trying to kill you. In a situation like this you need certain survival tools. To start off, if you are to survive in any sort of society, you are required to abide by rules in that certain environment. This concept is especially reinforced in the book “Call of the Wild” by Jack London. In this novel, narrated by a St. Bernard and a Scotch Shepard mix by the name of Buck, Buck has just been “recruited” to work as a sled dog pulling the sled. There are two specific dogs by the names of Dave and Sol-leks. They work alongside Buck, however they are most experienced. Whenever someone in the group falters, they punish them. “Once…when he [Buck] got tangled in the traces and delayed the start, not Dave and Sol-leks flew at him” (The Call of the Wild). This is an example of people having to adapt to the rules of different societies. In this particular example, the rules are to stay in line and perform your assigned task, and the regulators are the Dave and Sol-leks.…

The cool Autumn wind brushed by our faces while Colin, Brady, and I was walking down the trail to see if there was any action. It was silent, the only sound was our feet stepping on the crunchy leaves and the squirrels running around on the leafless trees. It was about 2:20 PM, and we were going to hunt at 2:30. It was time to get ready...the time to hunt!…

Since the beginning of time hunting has supported mankind. It has shaped our many cultures and woven many different spiritual beliefs. The first Americans that crossed the Bering Strait were nomadic hunters in pursuit of game. Native American Indian tribes relied strongly on hunting not only for food but they used animals parts for knives, bowstrings, and clothing. The early Europeans hunted for the same reasons, as did early peoples from across the globe. People even fought each other over hunting grounds. When the first European settlers arrived in the new world, the native Indians attacked to defend their homeland and hunting grounds. French fur traders soon began to exploit…

I said yes tiredly and we took off. when we arrived to the property we were hunting on we parked the truck and and walked to the hunting shed. When we arrived we opened the door and sat our chairs down. the hunting shed was a small box looking thing that our family have been using for around 40 years We waited and waited and then I saw something out of the corner of my eye. It was a doe i turned my head slowly and saw it about 100 yards away and thought is was a done deal. I picked up my gun and as I did I saw the deer running and by the time it stopped…
