Caleb Bradham, a New Bern, N.C. druggist who first formulated Pepsi-Cola, founded PepsiCo’s beverage business at the turn of the century. In 1898, he renames “Brad’s Drink”, a carbonated soft drink, which he created top to serve his drugstore’s fountain customers. As most pharmacies in 1896, Bradham's drugstore housed a soda fountain where the small-town clientele would meet to socialize. Bradham's establishment even featured a kind of primitive jukebox, which for a nickel would entertain the listener with the latest musical selections rendered by violin or piano or both. The new name, “Pepsi Cola”, is derived from the two of the principle ingredients, Pepsin and Kola Nuts. It was first used on the August 28. At that time, Bradham’s advertising praises his drink as “Exhilarating, invigorating, aids digestion”.
In support of America’s war effort, Pepsi changes the color of its bottle crowns to red, white and blue. The “Twice as much” advertising strategy expands to include the theme, “Bigger drink, Better taste”. The logo and the shape of Pepsi also changes.
