TGAB Tactical Manual
A Manual on the tactics and
Skills necessary for
Victory

By: Major General Luchtheman
Intro:
Tactics and planning have been a part of mankind from the dawn of man when spears and clubs were used, to the modern era where entering a room can mean the difference between life and death. Tactics are the key to saving lives while maintaining the edge to obtain victory. Without tactics, wars would be one large, bloody, mess of a battle where brute strength would win. Rather, carefully planning moves, attacks, defense, and movement of soldiers can easily throw an enemy off and ensure victory.

V oice the plan. Ensure all squad members know their individual roles as well as the overall goal of the team.
I nstincts take over. Allow your inner self to come out in battle. Make the enemy not want to advance to you.
C oordonate throughout the attack. If a plan changed, it is no good to keep it to yourself. Let all members know of the plan change.
T ake precautions. Always have a plan B. Make sure all soldiers know the plan B as well as the commanding officers.
O ne step ahead. Always remain mentally ahead of your enemies in battle. Make them second guess their attack.
R oute if necessary. Fall back to a stronger position where your chances of holding off the enemy increases (with permission from a superior.)
Y our moves matter. Make every step count. Do not let your team down.

Pre-Raid: The following are the steps required (and optional) for setting up for a raid prior to the start. Use this as a flowchart to ensure all precautions are taken.

In the case of the Van Rider’s victory story, we can learn a fundamental lesson that can be used even during a war. “The first thing I told our staff is that we would be in command and out of control”, Van Riper said when he was in the millennium challenge. He actually meant the soldiers will follow the guide and intent coming from the top, but will fight based on their intuition. According to Gladwell, we tend to function effectively in activities requiring rapid cognition, when we have less information to deal with. Though, this system possesses its own risks, applying in certain situations aid good results.…

As a team, there were clear comprehensions on differentiating between strategy and tactics. According to Youngwirth (2005), a strategy looks at "the big picture" of a situation and provides the direction in which to proceed; however, it does not tell you how to proceed. A tactic tells you how your strategy "will play out". Another way to look at developing strategies is to set your goals first, then your develop strategies, then tactics. A strategy is an idea, a "conceptualization of how a goal can be achieved" and a tactic is the "action you take to execute the strategy" (Furgurson, 2008).…

But what does all that theory mean, at the company level? How do the principles translate into action – at night, with the GPS down, the media criticizing you, the locals complaining in a language you don’t understand, and an unseen enemy killing your people by ones and twos? How does counterinsurgency actually happen?…

Since my departure from this brigade two and a half years ago the brigade has changed in the wrong direction. While I was assigned it was a functioning brigade, which worked together as a cohesive unit, free of spiteful competition. For whatever reasons I struggled with using centuries of military wisdom in conducting business in the past, my recent re-reading of excerpts from books by a few of the great military historians - B.H. Liddel Hart, Carl von Clausewitz and, of course, Sun Tsu, among others, has got me re-thinking about the application of what armies and empires have learned about beating the crap out of the other guy.…
