“The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down,” tells a story about a Hmong child Lia Lee, who suffers her first epileptic seizure at three months of age. Her treatment becomes difficult to go through because of her parents, Nao Kao and Foua, inability to speak English. They cannot speak to the doctors and many problems follow because of it. It started when Lia was three months old when her sister had slammed the front door. Quickly after, “Lia’s eyes rolled up, her arms jerked over her head, and she fainted” (Fadiman 20). Her parents diagnosed her illness as qaug dab peg, "the spirit catches you and you fall down." In the next couple months, Lia had twenty more seizures. Her parents doubted the American medical ways. When her parents did take her into the emergency room, the hospital did not have any interpreters. They did not know how to explain what happened because at the moment when they got to the hospital, Lia…

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down tells the story of Lia Lee, a Hmong child with epilepsy, whose tragic downfall reveals the dangers of a lack of cross-cultural communication in the medical profession. At the age of three months, Lia had her first seizure caused by the sound of a door being slammed shut, by her older sister Yer. Their parents, Foua and Nao Kao believed that the sound of the door had caused Lia’s soul to flee, they called her illness “qaug dab peg”, which means “the spirit catches you and you fall down”. Though Lia’s parents were concerned about her safety, they also believed her seizures made her special, as they knew many epileptics were chosen to be tvix neebs or shamans. Foua and Nao Kao brought Lia to the Merced Community Medical Center for treatment, but also used traditional healing methods to engage a tvix neeb to call back her soul. They believe in both medical and spiritual methods for their daughters’ treatments, but thought too much medicine could limit the effectiveness of the spiritual healing.…

The Lee's, a family that endured hardships, frustration, anger, confusion, and hope while living in the United State's of America. When the Lee's settled in the United States Foua gave birth to a baby girl named Lia. When Lia was three months old her older sister Yer slammed the front door. Moments later Lia’s eyes rolled into the back of her head, her arms jerked over her head, and she fainted. The only explanation her family could come up with was her soul was frightened by the noise and fled from her body and became lost. This in the Hmong community is known as qaug dab peg, “The Spirit Catches You and You fall Down” (Fadiman, 1997 p. 20). In the United States we call this behavior epilepsy, a neurological disorder that produces seizures from strong surges of electrical activity that affects certain parts of the brain. When an individual has two or more unprovoked seizures medical diagnosis of epilepsy is given (Epilepsy Foundation of America, 2012). When Lia’s seizures became worried Foua (mother) and Nao Kao (father) would carry Lia to the Merced Community Medical Center and this is where most of the story takes place; at the hospital and at Lia’s home.…

In “For Brothers of the Dragon," Terrance Hayes allows the speaker to relate to historical encounters by the speaker imagining what his brother’s tragic experience was like in correlation to Malcolm X's brothers' reaction to their brother's death. "If I were in their story, / I would have run down the assassins and remove their eyes," (9-10). The speaker is pointing out how Malcolm X's brothers abandoned Malcolm X instead of going to his funeral to show love and support as he wanted to do for his own brother. The speaker’s relationship with his brother seems to be abandoned as well. “One brother will want, at first, redemption; one brother will want, / at first revenge,” (30-31). This implicates the separation between the two. One brother strives to be rescued, while the other brother focuses on payback. They have abandoned each other through being single-mindedness and not taking time to understand one another.…

Demonic Possession is held by many belief systems to be the control of an individual by a malevolent supernatural being, such as Satan or a demon, which takes over the physical and mental capabilities of a victim. This victim could be an object, animal, or human being. The being acts through the victim without the victim’s consent. A demon is considered to be an “unclean spirit” which may cause demonic possession calling for an exorcism. Entities of darkness thrive on anger, violence, depression, and negativity. A demon does not act alone when possessing an individual; they work side by side with many evil spirits such as spirits of lust, hate, destruction, suicide, revenge, anger, anxiety, desperation, death, torment, etc.…

Eunju Namkung, a mere age six, a sweet little kindergartner, was playing with Ian Park, who was in second grade, but had no friends of his own age to play with. He had said something stupid with his goofy mouth and stupid big front teeth and stupid monkey ears, all curled at the edges, with the weird mole mounted on his right ear. He was making fun of her for being smaller, for being a girl. She was standing there, her cute fists balled tight, letting his voice trail off, watching him shake his head and smirk a smirk that asked for no forgiveness. Her braided pigtails got tighter and tighter, constricting by the power of her rage. The force seeped outward and outward, rippling from the stain of anger, a marble in her body, thinning away so that her cells could feel the dose of venom, while the mind lost track of the central fact of his injustice. Eyes closed, without a word, she got up, came to him, gave her hand to his face— his goofy face was lit with bonging and alarms. Her knuckles met his…
