How To Describe A Norm
The first norm I decided to us is “WHEN PEOPLE ASK YOU HOW YOU ARE DOING, TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR WHOLE DAY”. I was sitting in library doing my assignment. I then seen a young girl who I haven’t talk to in a while and approached her and said hey. She said hey back as she continue to walk. You could tell she had somewhere to go. I then stopped her and said “How you been?” “I been good how are you doing” She responded. I went on to tell her about and argument me and my mother had that morning that caused me to be late to class. I than went on to talk about the lecture my professor had taught me earlier. The look on her face was priceless I almost burst out laughing. She had looked at me like she wanted to shout shut up. I finally stop talking to her and let her go on about her way she sprinted away you can tell I had made her late for class. I felt so bad but at the same time I was filled with laughter and really glad I chose this norm.

There are many different views and opinions surrounding artificial limbs. Curtis Fraser from the National Post writes that artificial limbs are better than flesh and bones when it comes to running races. He describes that Oscar Pistorius had an advantage over his competitors due to his prosthetic limb when qualifying for the Olympics (Fraser). He explains that due to the nature of Pistorius’ double amputee his prosthetics could be made longer which increases his stride length, thereby potentially making him faster (Fraser). This raised questions about standards and rules that should be drafted in order to keep the sport fair. Fraser is not the only scholar who brings up this question of…

Norms are behaviors that are accepted by society. They are actions that do not stand out, and they help shape how a society functions. For example, there is a norm that students walk into a classroom and they sit down in a desk, and they expect the teacher to stand at the front of the classroom. Without this norm, the student would walk into a classroom not knowing if they should sit in the desk, or stand at the front of the classroom. One of type of norm are folkways, which are very small norms that are broken often, and usually there is little or no repercussion for breaking them. The repercussion for breaking norms is known as sanctions. External sanctions are the punishments given by other people, such as making fun of someone for breaking a norm. Internal sanctions are punishments we give to ourselves for breaking a norm, such as feeling guilty. The extremeness of the sanction correlates directly with what kind of norm was broken.…

I was waiting for my uncle to talk with him but he did not even come to my home so I thought someone is going wrong with him. After a while, someone knocks the door and I opened the door, it was my grandmother from her house. I tried to communicate with her using hand gestures, but she was not being able to understand me so I thought writing on the piece of paper is a good idea. I wrote on paper in my own language (Nepali) by saying “I was missing you from back home when you left us”. After she finishes reading papers, I was already full of tears and I talk with her using hand gestures that I want to talk with you, but she tells me I will talk to your parents and she left me. On those days, I was shocked, nervous and frustrated by seeing different attitudes towards…

For my norm violation, I decided to go out into a public place and briefly interact with complete strangers. To achieve this, I decided to simply say hi to individuals as they passed by me. In picking my location, I wanted to be somewhere with a lot of foot traffic. Ultimately, I decided to go to Fred Meyer on a Saturday, when I knew it would be busier, and start saying hi to unsuspecting shoppers. Even though this was a minor norm violation, it still made me feel very uncomfortable. Each time I went to speak I became nervous and scared people would respond to me negatively. After pushing through the awkwardness, however, and saying hello to large handful of people, I seemed to be getting a handful of the same reactions. People would either…

    Norm Breaking Norms

The norm I will be breaking will be showing up to a party appropriately, and I will break the norm by showing up with a horse mask during the party. I chose to break this norm because I find horses and horse masks oddly appealing on the internet, and I think showing up to parties appropriately is a norm because it is not common to wear masks to non-themed parties. I also chose to break this norm because I own a horse mask, but have not figured out the perfect moment to wear it. The norm breaking event would have me show up to the party and ask for bathroom locations. Once I enter the bathroom, I will put the horse mask on, and then come back out to see their reactions. I might also perform silly or ridiculous actions, such as pretending to be a horse and frolicking around in an unfamiliar neighborhood. I have told my friends to follow me around while I am doing this activity, in case somebody calls the cops on me for wearing a horse mask in public.…

    Breaking a Social Norm

For my breaking a social norm, my friends and I wanted to do something creative that no one in my class would do. So in a couple of minutes of thinking we figure something creative. Our plan was to go to McDonalds and use the drive thru to order our order, but the catch is that I was supposed to walk to the drive thru with no car just me standing there ordering my order and when they said to pull up to the next widow I would just walk to the window and pay and walk to the other window to get my order. We did this after the homecoming dance around like 10:40. So I basically I got of the car I started walking to the drive thru and I was basically stuck in traffic. I got behind this black ford SUV and I waited for my turn. So finally it was my turn and I order everything on the dollar menu. But my friends also told me to say “god damn!” while I order something. So I sounded like this “can I get a goddamn McChicken” So the guy said please drive up to the next window and I started walking. When I got there you should’ve seen his reaction like he was expecting a car not a guy walking to the drive thru. He didn’t say anything he just gave me change back and I started walking to the next window to pick up my order.…

People have their own beliefs and philosophies on what they consider valuable. Every person develops expectations, of what they consider proper. Sociologists call such expectations, norms, rules of behavior that develop out of group's values (Henslin, 2002, P. 45). The norm I chose to break, was the norm of eating certain foods with utensils. On one Saturday evening, I went to a restaurant called Olive Garden. I was dressed properly, and looked well suited for the restaurant standards. I ordered my food from the menu. I ordered a vegetable soup and alfredo fettuccini. Once I got my meal, I took the utensils wrapped in a napkin and put them aside. I started eating with my bare hands, and drank the soup straight from the bowl. While I was doing this, I wanted to see how the people around me would react. Thus, I would make slurping noises while drinking my soup, so I can get people's attention. Also, I would cough really ostentatiously to get people attention while I was eating my pasta and drinking the soup! I wanted to see how people react at different locations. Therefore, I first went to Olive Garden, and then went to a local low profiled restaurant, later that night, called Silver Lake. I elected to break this norm because, I wanted to know how essential eating certain foods with utensils are to people. Moreover, I wanted to see the confines to which others would react if they saw the norms of eating certain foods with utensils being encroached. Also, to see how different cultures and different backgrounds would react to my behavior.…

    Breaking a Norm

In our lives there are certain norms that we should uphold within our society. Whether petty or significant, these norms are a large basis for many of the ways we act, think and live. For this paper, I was given an assignment to go out and take on a challenging experiment to break a norm, detail my experience and record the reactions of observers. I figured what better setting to break a norm than downtown Atlanta at the Five Points Marta Station where there are a mixture of lots and lots of people to obtain reactions from. A norm, which is defined as a principle of right action binding upon the members of a group and serving to guide, control, or regulates proper and acceptable behavior (Webster dictionary, 2008). Within our culture, these norms are based on a general agreement of what are accepted as normal actions or mannerisms to the whole society. Before I began this experiment, I felt nervous and a bit antsy. I went and performed my norm violation on an elevator at the Five Points Marta Station in downtown Atlanta around 4:40 pm on a cold, windy evening as I was on my way home from class. The observers were quite diverse from different backgrounds and subcultures (black, Hispanic & white) comprised of school students and people coming from and going to work, going to other appointments or running errands and such. I got on and stood in the back of the elevator. I remained in the elevator for approximately 15-20 minutes going from Westbound to Northbound (up and down) entertaining different groups of observers getting on and off the elevator. I figured that I would be best off staying in the elevator for the time; this way there could be enough time for the appropriate variety of responses to the odd elevator behavior I was displaying. During that time I began talking into my pinky and thumb as though it was a cell phone. I held two conversations with myself in English and Spanish mixing it up. Unfortunately, I 'm not fluent in Spanish, but I took advantage of…

There have been many social norms that society has “put” in place just to keep things as smooth and as un-awkward as possible. Everyday people follow these norms almost unconsciously. It is expected that every other person follow then them too. So, with this in mind, so my goal is to see how people react when I violate one of these norms.…

“Hello,” said a kind face to me as I entered my first eighth-grade class at a new school. “Hello,” I said back, not knowing how to take the gesture. I walked into a classroom full of new faces. Everyone was gawking at the new kid. I thought to myself, “is it what I’m wearing? Do I look weird? Should I say something?” I did nothing but go to my assigned seat, and sat quietly just like I did on the bus months prior. As I sat in silence, I listened intently as the teacher floated across the room while calling roll. When I heard my name called, I tried to muster up the courage to address myself in a casual way, but I’m sure that it came out as a nervous “here.” As she finished roll call, each student was handed a mountain of forms and papers. Then the class slowly transformed into a parade of shouts and laughter. Everyone was welcoming each other back, except for me. I sat there in silence examining everyone.…

The day began just like any other day. The ringing of the alarm clock and a quick breakfast that could hardly be call a meal. I was afraid. My way around this fear was to retreat into myself. This seemed to be the easy answer for me. I did not put myself out there. There fore I did not risk rejection. Looking back now, that was not the answer. I know now that I missed out on a lot. I guess that’s why it is said that hind sight is 20/20.…
