Whitehorse is strategically surrounded with three famous mountains, namely Grey to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn to the south. The vehicle would function as both a car and a home over the next three weeks until we could find suitable accommodations. After living 19 years of my life in Kamloops, whose city slogan was the “Tournament Capital of Canada” and experiencing the convenience of living in the metropolitan port city of Vancouver, Paul cautioned me that Fort McMurray possessed all the characteristics of a boom town: lack of cultural and social amenities; blue-collar tradesman securing wages comparable to that of a medical doctor; and poor infrastructure that created traffic congestion and increased the probability of accidents along the main arterial road, HWY 63 ( TravelBC, 2015; Davidsen, Deacon & Kiff, 2013, p.g 68). Herein was the first lie I began telling myself and others: Fort McMurray could be just as beautiful as Vancouver. After passing the ‘Welcome to Fort McMurray, We have the ENERGY’ sign, I was appalled to see that on Sept 14th 2003, there was so much snow on the ground that it had become a meridian which blocked the view of the oncoming lane of traffic. As we pulled into 7-Eleven for a cup of hot chocolate, I was shocked to observe that the loitering patrons were not my own kind; the everyday teenager. Instead there where prostitutes wearing six inch stiletto heels, men whose recently cashed paycheques were on hand to make a purchase, and intoxicated…

Bannock, which sits across the street from Toronto’s historic Old City Hall, and kitty-corner to our current city hall, was created in partnership with Oliver & Bonacini, renowned Canadian restaurateurs. It is a restaurant and café proudly draped in Canadiana—with a modern twist. Bannock, which is named for the simple, humble bread Scottish settlers used as their daily fare when they first moved to Canada, has inspired both the restaurant’s look, as well as its menu filled with wholesome, fresh ingredients that reflect Canada’s rich regional and cultural diversity. Featured treats include pickerel tacos, Ontario venison chuck chilli, St-Canut pulled pork tourtière, and delectable sweets including sour cream donuts and warm s’mores pie.…

Warren Bennis, an American scholar widely regarded as a pioneer on the contemporary field of leadership studies, once said that “Leadership is the wise use of power. Power is the capacity to translate intention into reality and sustain it.” Indeed, leadership comes with power but in order to gain this power, a leader must encompass three main leadership qualities. Besides winning the hearts and mind of the people, a leader must also be able to lead by example and have foresight. Only by mastering the above 3 qualities then can a leader be considered as a successful leader. Do you still think successful leadership is just about winning the hearts and minds of the people?…

Everyone wants to succeed, but few people take time to study success. Similarly, everyone dislikes failure, but few people invest the time and energy necessary to learn from their mistakes. Often we are too busy basking in the glory of our triumphs to think through what we did right, or the pain of failure is sufficiently intense that many of us want to move on and put it behind us as soon as we can. Yet those who want to improve their chances of success can not afford to disregard the issue of why, despite seemingly equal levels of intelligence and education, some people succeed where others fail.…
