It’s hard for a minimum wage worker to find a place to live because they can’t pay the security deposit so they get stuck staying in a hotel or moving in with a friend or a family member. For example, Tina and her husband don’t make enough money so they had to stay in the Days Inn paying $60 a night. Getting stuck paying this every night would be impossible. Joan lives in her van. Gail is stuck with a roommate that keeps hitting on her. Claude shares a two room apartment with his girlfriend and two other people. And Annette lives with her mother. She’s six months pregnant and abandoned by her boyfriend.…
How the Other Half Lives is a book that is written and published by Jacob Riis in 1890. Chapter two of the book, The Awakening, is one of the primary documents included in the reader. In this book, Jacob Riis describes in full details of the horrendous and disgusting living conditions that many immigrants had to live in. Jacob Riis is a photojournalist that “muckrakes”, or basically to expose something harsh that an individual or a group of people has to go through. Specifically, the author shows the world some areas of New York in the 1880s that immigrants lived in.…
In the book How the Other Half Lives, is the most touching and sympathetic book that anyone will ever read. Written by Jacob Riis, who was a poor immigrant himself, based this book on the poor living conditions he lived. Being an immigrant, it was hard for Jacob to find work. He had no money; therefore, he lived in police station lodging houses and shelters of all sorts. As soon as he found a successful job being a police reporter, he began writing and lecturing to inform people what a disgrace many people went through, including him. Jacob Riis experienced poverty early in his life and it was sad to know that many middle and upper class people did not know what he and as well as other people went through.…
To analyze the gender stereotypes through the female’s traits and male’s traits in OLX Indonesia television commercials “Household” version, as the main theory, the writer uses Simone de Beauvoir’s critical thinking about the construction of gender by the society in feminine’s point of view and how women become what society wants to be because of the social construction about femininity and masculinity. She asserted that, “One is not born but rather becomes, a woman” (Beauvoir 1953, 273). In her book “The Second Sex”, Beauvoir stated about women that actually become women as what society expect them to be because they are taught to do so; women should be like this and not should be like that. Moreover, it told about how men become the ‘Subject’…
The poem Ancestors by Peter Skrzynecki is a excellent example of belonging and expresses his feeling of not belonging in his family. The poem presents a series of rhetorical questions which reflects on a dream Skrzynecki has had or is having and what he believes the meaning is. We could deduce from this poem and its use of present tense that the dream is a recurring dream about these vague images of Ancestors and how Skrzynecki is desperately trying to understand their relevance to him. In this dream, the ancestors are unfamiliar to Skrzynecki but give off a very powerful presence to him. They appear to have a message for him, but he can’t hear what it is, they are always pointing at him but never speak so there meaning becomes very mysterious. The use of rhetorical questions gives the poem a dramatic feel and makes the reader feel the same frustration that Skrzynecki feels.…
This semester, I learned abundance amount of information that I did not know before and I took each and every new knowledge into heart. I learn about parallelism, misplaced modifier, PIE, commas, i.e./e.g., entry points/ strategies, active vs. passive verbs, and not using ‘you’ in academic writing and more but what stood out to me the most was PIE. Every topic I learned in this class will be in use toward my major but mostly in future papers. This semester, I learned point illustration explanation (PIE) in my writing skills which will be valuable in my future college papers.…
In his novel, The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap, Matt Taibbi juxtaposes the wealthy and the poor in order to illustrate the disparity between the treatment of high-class criminals and lower-class citizens. The novel also notes the growth of the inequality and the schism between the classes. He uses illuminating narratives from both of the classes to demonstrate the huge difference between the rich and the poor in terms of how they are treated by the American justice system. Taibbi’s book opened my eyes to the extent of this injustice and from that I have learned a great deal, most which I can apply to my position as a Resident Advisor.…
Although most of us who pursue higher education are intellectually well aware of the extensive effect of the media, Jean Kilbourne’s and Jackson Katz’s documentaries brought the whole new awareness of stereotype advertising, to which I never actually paid attention. How often do we really take this fact into account while assessing a client? The truth is that “I never paid attention” is utterly the complete opposite of what is happening. Indeed, what I did not realize is that I always paid attention to the advertising; however, this type of advertising is so perpetual and is seen everywhere that this extreme stereotype advertising clearly became normal to me over the years. It is almost like the procedural memory. If I were trying to learn how to ride a bicycle for the first time, I would obviously be attentive to every part of my body so that I would not fall from the bicycle, as it would be a new experience. But we all know that this new experience that required so much of our attention eventually becomes normalized and requires much less attention to perform as we practice over and over.…

The Stranger by Albert Camus was published in 1946. The novel begins with Meursault receiving a telegram informing him of his mother’s death. Over the next two weeks after the funeral, Meursault carries on like nothing tragic happened. He gets a girlfriend, befriends a pimp, and goes on a beach vacation with both. During the vacation, he and Raymond, the pimp, get into a fight with the Arabs and Meursault kills one without an explanation for the crime. At the murder trial, the court said he was cold-hearted and hated humankind because he killed his mother, although he did not physically kill his mother. They gave him the death penalty for not caring about his mother but nothing for murdering the Arab. While he was waiting for his turn to die in prison, Meursault thought that it would not be so bad to die because he was leaving society and all that goes with it behind.…
