How Does The Corn Affect The Food Industry
Big corporations have taken over the food industry and have reduced the quality of our food for profit. In 1970, the five largest meat-packing companies managed only 25% of the industry. Today, the four largest manage 80% of the industry. They have taken over farming in America and have caused many negative effects for farmers, for the animals, and at our dinner tables. In the past, farmers were free to decide what they were going to grow and how they were going to grow it. Food was fresh and healthy. Today, food looks healthy and comes in "farm fresh" packaging so we think it is healthy, but the reality is that the conditions under which our food is grown is definitely not healthy. Despite testing, food recalls mostly happen when people get sick from the product. You would think that E.coli is contained to animal products, but actually, it is spread to fruits and vegetables because animal manure is used to treat the soil that our fruits and vegetables are grown in. To add, corn is the largest crop grown in America. Corn is in about 90% of all foods made in the U.S. It is cheap to grow and buy. It may sound like a good idea, but corn actually is a large contributor to obesity. Because it is cheap, farmers use it to feed animals to help them grow bigger, which humans ultimately consume. It is also used in many other products in the form of corn meal or corn syrup, which humans also consume. Chips, cookies, soda, candy, crackers, orange juice, pop tarts, mayonaise, waffles, spaghettios, you name it, it probably contains some form of corn. It is also cheap for consumers to buy, which is why many people choose to eat more junk food than healthy food because it is what they can afford. In the end, this is also why many Americans are overweight. It is what we are being fed. Corporations indirectly are forcing us to consume corn by producing affordable products that taste good. The top 5 meat industries controlled 25% of the market back in 1970, and now that number has risen to an outstanding 80% of the market (“100 Days of Real Food”). The documentary first illustrations a supermarket filled with different food items.
