Bulimia nervosa usually starts with restriction of food intake that leads to uncontrolled consumption of large amounts of food followed by inappropriate methods of weight control such as self-induced vomiting, abuse of laxatives or excessive exercise. Bulimia and anorexia are kind of the same in certain ways they are both generally thought to be a psychological eating disorder. These are both conditions that go beyond out-of-control dieting. The cycle that you develop while having bulimia can include overeating and purging which can quickly become and obsession similar to an addiction to drugs or other substances. Bulimia can be found in as many as 30% of adolescents. Bulimia nervosa affects 1.5 to 40% of women of different ages and about 10 to 20 % of sufferers are male.

Feelings of guilt and panic can follow leading to trying to get rid of the food eaten. This eventually becomes a cycle of food restriction, bingeing and purging behaviour. Bulimia sufferers can have serious problems with self-esteem and may have clinical depression, relationship problems, health problems and difficulty with day today life

There is no actual proven cause for developing an eating disorder. They can occur in any person at any stage in their life and can be caused by anything such as bullying, abuse, family problems, peer pressure etc.

There are many serious effects that come with suffering with bulimia. It causes damaging side effects to the body. There is not one part in the body that does not get affected by having long term bulimia. the main parts that get damaged include - Blood - anemia

Heart - irregular heart beat and blood pressure
Body fluids - Dehydration and low potassium
Intestines - Abdominal cramping and bloating
Brain - Depression, fear of gaining weight and dizziness
Cheeks - swelling and soreness
Mouth - tooth enamel erosion and gum disease
Throat & Esophagus - sore and irritated
Muscles - Fatigue
Skin - Abrasion of knuckles and dry skin
