126 min. King Arthur is supposedly a real person who existed in times of feudal Rome. The movie King Arthur is a fictional take on the real life of King Arthur. King Arthur is mainly known for being king because he pulled Excalibur, his sword, from a rock as a child, which showed his natural strength. That is not true. He did pull Excalibur from a rock, but he became king because of his war triumphs and great leadership of the Knights of the Round Table. The opening scene portrays the childhoods of Lancelot and Arthur. Lancelot was abducted from his family and pressed into service as a knight, and Arthur was volunteered by his father to be a knight. However, they forget to hide some of the knights in the wooden rabbit first before they send it into the castle.     Once we know Lancelot's true identity, we are able to fully appreciate the stark contrast between his name for the first half of the book and his selfhood. He was known as "the knight of the cart." With that title came shame and judgement. The irony is that while people called him this and judged him, he was, in reality, possibly the best knights to exist. Knightly honor is one of the main themes that runs throughout the story. King Bademagu is a man concerned with "keeping the laws of knighthood," which include being honorable, noble and, in all ways, good. The most important characteristic a knight must have is pureness of heart. This is why Meleagant could never be considered one of the best knights. While he is fearless and strong, his heart was "as cold as a stone, devoid of pity" (ll. 3171-72). Lancelot is the sheer opposite of Meleagant. While just as strong, Lancelot is portrayed as a good man and pure of heart. He does not relish the thought of killing people and is often seen granting people mercy in the story.     The myth says that the blade could cut steel, but the most amazing thing about it was its sheath (Cambriac 14). The sword’s sheath was magical and would keep Arthur safe wherever he went, and it would always heal his wounds. Arthur had won many battles at this point, but when he returned home, he had found that Lancelot had stolen his wife (Cambriac 14). Arthur took his army again and led siege to Lancelot’s castle for many days when finally they struck a deal. Lancelot returned Quenivere to Arthur and was exiled to France. In Arthur’s rage, he followed Lancelot into France leaving his nephew Mordred in charge (Cambriac 14). While Arthur was gone, he received news that his nephew had declared himself king and had taken Quenivere as his Queen. Arthur hurried back home, and in his sleep he had a dream that told him not to attack right away or something terrible would happen. So he sent messengers into the castle to negotiate (Cambriac 14). While they were in the castle, one of the messengers was attacked by a snake. The messenger drew his sword to kill the snake, but the sun sent a glimmer off the blade that Arthur’s army saw. They thought it was a soldier drawing his blade to start a fight so they attacked. (Cambriac 14). This battle went on for many days. During the battle, Arthur’s sword Excalibur and sheath fell off of him leaving him vulnerable (Cambriac 14). Arthur quickly picked up a spear and charged at his nephew. His nephew struck down into his skull while Arthur also piercing his nephew’s heart at the same time. Both of them died. While this was just a myth, Arthur did die in 540 A.D (Cambriac 14).
