Cons to the Home-schooling Debate
While home-schooling can do a great deal of good, there are also a number of disadvantages. First, there are the time restraints. Whether you work, are a single parent or simply choose a time-intensive schooling method, there is a great deal of factors limiting the time available for home-schooling. Financial restrains are another concern, as a source of income is often lost when the decision is made to home-school. The closeness of home-schooling may prove too much for some families, as parents often must spend a larger amount of time with their children.
Other disadvantages come from limited social interactions. First, team sports opportunities are limited for most home schoolers, especially teenagers who want to participate in competitive sports. Home schoolers may find themselves limited in outside connection. While family interaction is great, kids should interact with others outside of the family in order to live full and well-developed lives. Lastly, home-schooling is considered unusual, so you may experience negative comments and attitudes as a result of home-schooling.

As people become more disenchanted with the current education system there has been a rise in the instances of parents deciding to home-school their children as indicated by home-schooling statistics. This is not a decision to be taken lightly, and is one that requires a lot of research beforehand. As you will discover, there are many serious disadvantages of home-schooling.
The first disadvantage of home school programs is that no matter how well designed they are they will not be a match for a nationally recognized school curriculum with examinations and accreditation. Furthermore, unless you have trained and hold qualifications as a teacher you will not be able to teach your children as efficiently as a trained professional teacher would. You want to give your children the best possible start in life and that means providing them with the education to be able to succeed in the world of work.
The stress that it will place on you and your family is a strong argument against home-schooling. Not only do you have to prepare lessons on every subject, but you also need to have researched each topic enough to feel comfortable answering questions your child may have. This is a huge amount of work, and even after this, there is still the question of how to present the lessons. If the child is struggling to understand then they could blame you, resulting in animosity and resentment between you and your child.
Although you may still feel as if you could do a better job than a professional teacher, you would have to seriously rearrange your life to be able to do so. Home-schooling is a full time job, and you have to consider whether you have the time and resources to do it. It may not be financially viable to not be working in order to home-school your child. When you factor in the cost of home-school materials and resources it can be a very expensive undertaking.
One of the more serious negative effects of home-schooling is that children can miss out on the opportunity to interact with other children. This can stunt their development socially as they do not learn how to communicate or behave in group settings. This is obviously a vital skill in living and working as an adult.
Further, there is always the danger that they will look back with regret at missing out on school experiences, such as their high school prom. Even without the school setting, the fact that they do not go to school with the other kids in the neighbourhood will single them out, making it even harder to make friends.
These are just some of the cons of home-schooling. The education of a child is one of the key responsibilities of a parent, and they must think very carefully before removing their children from the social learning environment of a public school. All of the arguments for and against must be weighed up, however there is a clear indication that the disadvantages of home-schooling far outweigh the advantages.

Some parents choose homeschooling because of the protection their child gains and some choose public education because of the atmosphere.
