Hollywood Pretty Woman
The film Pretty Woman is a 1990 romantic comedy set in Los Angeles, California which takes place just following the 80’s era. The story of Pretty Woman centers on a Hollywood prostitute Vivian Ward who gets hired by a very wealthy businessman, (Edward Lewis), to be at his beck and call or escort for several business and social functions. During that time, they gradually begin to develop a relationship over the course of Vivian’s week-long stay in his suite.
Edward then takes his lawyer’s exotic Lotus S4 Esprit and heads down Hollywood Boulevard where he took a detour to ask for directions. He has no other choice but to ask a nearby beautiful prostitute by the name of Vivian, who is willing to help him reach his point of destination.

    This film follows our protagonist, Stella (Barbara Stanwyck) through her journey of courtship, marriage to loss. Stella sneaks her way into meeting Stephen Dallas (John Boles) after finding out in a tabloid magazine article about his family fortune being loss and him ending his engagement to Helen (Barbara O’Neil) the socialite. Stella’s complete devotion to her daughter Laurel (Anne Shirley) and her reluctance to change who she is, keeps her from moving to New York with her newly promoted husband Stephen (John Boles). Living separate lives, not completely confessing to the fact that the couple was what would currently be called “legally separated” due to probable censors. The film’s thematic of maternal sacrifice and the loneliness, devotion of the film cause this movie to become what is known in the film industry as a “Weepie”. The Mise-en-scene of the film is predominantly domestic and focused on the excesses of interiors and Stella’s outlandish fashions. The film cannot be categorized as realistic, even though it seems naturalistic at times. The storytelling of Stella’s constant journey to better her life and that of Laurel’s, is purely stylized. Stella’s persona sticks out like a sore thumb against the socialite circles, dressing in the eccentric fashions she deems as stylish, speaking too loud, not fitting into the lady-like deportment her husband demanded.…

    In the story “Golden Girl” by Gillian Chan, the protagonist, Donna, proves to be a very jealous character by her actions and by her words. Her jealousy for her best friend Anna becomes an overpowering quest to destroy any chance of Anna becoming popular again after she makes the mistake for falling for a student teacher. Donna first shows her jealousy for Anna when she says, “I used to hope that some of whatever she had would rub off on me. I mean, I deserved some pay-off for all the crap she dished out” (Chan 78-79). These words demonstrate Donna’s jealous character because this is what tells you that she is only hanging out with Anna because she wants to become popular. Her way of letting us know that the friendship between Anna and her is not true begins the plot for this story. Another way Donna proves to be a jealous character is by her actions. After suggesting to Anna to write a note to the student teacher, she goes up to Michael and says, “You’re never going to believe what she’s done now.” And hands Michael the note (Chan 91). This quotation demonstrates that Donna’s jealousy has taken over the best of her. She was trying to replace Anna by setting her up for a big fall down but it all backfired on her when Michael called her vicious and defended Anna. The last piece of evidence that shows Donna is jealous of Anna occurs at the end of the story. Donna thinks to herself, “I never told anyone, though. There was no point. After all, gold just keeps shining. It’s only us cheap imitations that tarnish and get junked” (Chan 92). This is when Donna realizes that all of this jealousy and hatred between them will never stop Anna from coming back on top. She realizes that no matter how hard she trys to overpower Anna, she will always come out on top. Through her words and her actions, Donna proves that she is an extremely jealous…
