1. What were the three forms of English madrigals? Describe each type.

There is madrigal proper (used word painting to associate music with the words in text and was through composed), ballet (stories are told by the dancers’ moves and what tone the music is), and ayre (uses a multitude of ways to be performed but does not necessarily need to have accompaniment).

2. What were chorales? Why were they popular?

Chorales were melodies that were easy to sing, usually as a result of folk. They were popular because they could be put into hymnbooks through the use of a printing press.

A consort is a six instrument ensemble. The instruments include: bandore, recorder, flute, violin, bass viola de gamba, lute, and cittern

4. Who was Guillaume Dufay? What contributions did he make to Renaissance music?

Guillaume Dufay was a very influential composer of the fifteenth century. He was a Flanco-Flemish composer who wrote in almost all forms and limited himself to basically nothing.

5. Who was William Byrd? What contributions did he make to Renaissance music?

William Byrd was an Englishman, born in 1543, that had been one of the first composers to make consort music.

Renaissance music was came about in around the 1400’s and was quite advanced. Medieval music was created during the Middle Ages, before the 1400’s, and was pretty monotonic.
