Highway Elongation Test
EXPERIMENT : 1

TOPIC : ELONGATION TEST

OBJECTIVE : To determine suitable elongation aggregate for pavement.

APPARATUS : 1. Sieve 2. Elongation equipment 3. Tray 4. Scale weight 5. Sieve vibrator

MATERIAL : 2000g aggregate.

PROCEDURE 1. Deliberate 2000g sample of aggregate.

2. Size of sieve :- 6.3mm,10mm,14mm,20mm,28mm and 37.5mm

3. Get the weight of plain sieve (a)

4. Put the aggregate into the sieve and vibrate it for 10 minutes.

5. After vibrate get the value of weight of plain sieve + aggregate (b)

6. Record the mass in gram. (b – a = c) [ M1 ]

7. Get the percentage of retained aggregate ( c / M1 x 100% )

8. Mass balance after discharge mass less than 5% ( M2 )

9. Use elongation equipment to get suitable size for this test

10. Mix the particle and deliberate elongation mass [ M3 ]

ELONGATION INDEX = M3 / M2 X 100 |

RESULT :

Sieve | a | b | c | % | Mass balance(g) | 6.3 | 1.020 | 1.118 | 98 | 98 /1992x100 = 4.92 | 0 | 10.0 | 1.023 | 1.658 | 455 | 455 /1992x100= 22.8 | 455 | 14.0 | 1.132 | 2.428 | 1296 | 1296 / 1992 x100= 65 | 1296 | 20.0 | 1.399 | 1.542 | 143 | 143 /1992x100= 7.18 | 143 | 28.0 | 1.502 | 1.502 | 0 | 0/1992x100 = 0 | 0 | 37.5 | 1.488 | 1.488 | 0 | 0/1992x100 = 0 | 0 | TOTAL | | | M1 = = 1992 | | M2 = 1894 |

M3 = 1.183

Elongation = 1183 / 1894 x 100 = 62.46%.

QUESTION :

1. Discuss how the shape and elongation of the rock can effect the strength.

* Aggregate shape, texture and grading have a significant effect on the performance of fresh concrete. Aggregate blends with well-shaped, rounded ,and

    Table 3 shows the flow value of the mixtures containing BA. It shows that flow value for the BA blended cement mortars were decreased with increase in the percentage of BA. The control mix (BAM 0) has a flow value of 147 mm [30]. The flow value of mixes BAM 5, BAM 10, BAM 15, BAM 20, BAM 25, and BAM 30 shows decrease of 146, 146, 145, 144, 143, and 142 mm respectively. BA requires more water for proper consistency when compared to that of ordinary Portland cement due to irregular shape with rough surfaces, high porous texture and absorptive in nature [5]. Increase in water demand of BA, decreases the flow value and resulted in poor workability. W/C ratio was kept same as 0.5 for all mixes. The flow value of BAM 30 reduced to 3.4 % due to…

    We always tend do daily routine day after day every single week or month. Predicting what is going to happen after this one part of assessments. And reading the alphabet or number in order, as it is suppose to be. It’s like this because we are programmed to learn this specific term or order to fit in the proper format of education. Well in J. Ridley Stroop experiment, he shows how people would struggle in a slower pace in serial verbal reaction. He subjected seventy college undergraduate students (14 males and 56 females) to part take in a verbal reaction test. As the experiment was commenced, it was to see how well each student were to identify the color of each written word, rather than saying the word. The first layout of the experimentation…

    The properties of aggregates used in asphalt concretes are very important to the performance of the pavements in which the asphalt concretes are used. Often pavement distress, such as stripping and rutting, can be traced directly to the aggregates used. Clearly, proper aggregate selection is necessary for attaining desired performance. The aggregate used in surface course of the highway pavements are subjected to wearing due to movement of traffic. When vehicles move on the road, the soil particles present between the pneumatic tyres and road surface cause abrasion of road aggregates. The steel reamed wheels of animal driven vehicles also cause considerable abrasion of the road surface. Therefore, the road aggregates should be hard enough to resist abrasion. Resistance to abrasion of aggregate is determined in laboratory by Los Angeles test machine.…

    In order to ensure the mixing quality of concrete, the concrete mixture should be mixed evenly, mixing time should be short, residual quantity should be less, and the concrete mixer should have low consumption and less pollution. The main factors that would affect the mixing quality of concrete mixer are: the structure of mixer, loading capacity of the mixer, feeding program and feeding position of the mixture, configuration of the agitating vane, mixing speed, wear condition of the blade scaleboard, etc.…
