Health Sciences Program
For my post-secondary education, I would like to study in the Health Sciences Program at McMaster university for four years to receive my bachelor degree, and then to follow this, apply to medical school. The reason for why I want to go specifically into the Health Sciences Program at McMaster university is because of its very unique approach to teaching their students the studies of health, wellness, and illness. The program is the only program in Ontario that has a full range of departments within health sciences, including clinical departments of medicine, pathology and molecular medicine, psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences, clinical epidemiology, and biostatistics. The university provides students with exposure to research labs and …show more content…
Most pediatricians have offices and examination rooms as their work space. An average pediatrician works around 50 hours a week. During these 50 hours, they spend time at the office seeing patients, visiting patients in the hospital, and completing paperwork. Office hours usually begin around 9:00 am in the morning, and continue until 4:00 - 5:00 pm, with a one hour lunch break in between. The work environment can be stressful at times because working with children can be an onerous task if they are not cooperating. However, at the end of the day it is all worth it because a pediatrician’s work environment is quite comfortable, and vacation days are available with flexible dates even spanning up to 1 …show more content…
I assist the elderly in various programs such as arts and crafts and bingo, as well as, provide adminstrative support at the volunteer office. I have already acquired around 200 volunteer hours, however, I plan on continuing to volunteer at a variety of places in the future to continue to contribute and give back to my community.

The trade I have chosen from the Service sector is Child Development Practitioner. This trade entails planning various intellectual and physical activites for preschool and school-age children. Child Development Practitioners also care for infants and toddlers, as well as use teaching methods and childcare developmental theories to supervise and lead children in activites such as reading, writing, arts and crafts, and music. The personal qualities you need to succeed in this position are patience, dedication, and problem-solving skills. Children can be difficult to work with, and they require lots of time and work put into them in order to be able to succeed in taking care of them, and enriching them with knowledge. By being a Child Development Practitioner, I would gain first-hand experience on what it is like to work with children. This would be very useful as I am planning to go into medicine because in the future I would be working with children as a pediatrician. It is

There are many aspects of health care that intrigue me. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse; unfortunately it is very difficult to get into the program. However, if I ever go back to do that, I would want to either do labor and delivery or pediatrics. I have had the privilege of witnessing the birth of one of my nieces and it was the most amazing experience. To be a nurse and being a part of that on a daily basis would be awesome. I also have an extra soft spot for children, which is why pediatrics would also be of interest to me. Life threatening diseases do not only affect adults. I feel that being able to help children would only be helping our future.…

I chose to become an early childhood professional because when I got out of high school I needed a job to pay my bills. But the main reason was because I loved being around children and at the time I did not have any of my own yet and there were none in my family either. So I thought “what a great way to spend the day and get paid to spend time with other people’s kids.” In the beginning it was really hard though. It was not all playtime, there were rules and regulations to follow. There was also daily…

My biggest community activity is for Special Olympics of New Jersey. My family and I attend many of the events for SONJ including the Summer Games. I started volunteering by working and playing with the athletes. The area we staffed was where the athletes came to take a break and play with carnival-like games. The ages ranged from little kids to adults. It was fun putting smiles on their faces when you told them they won! It showed me we aren’t any different than them. They still like to do sports and have fun. They love to win prizes as do we. They just have disabilities that make them special. Over all volunteering for SONJ is a fantastic experience and in my opinion every boy and…

Most pediatricians work in an office environment, mostly in group practice, where several physicians join together to practice. Pediatricians also commonly work solo or in two-physician practices. The fewer physicians working in an office, the more responsibilities there are in terms of supervising support staff, patient caseload and being on call to answer patients' emergencies as they arise. On the whole, though, office work environments are comfortable.…

Some skills I’ve learned in Highschool that would help with this career would be organization because with younger children there has to be a lot of structure and timeliness, without it everything would be chaotic. Since I was nine I have watched children whether it was my three little cousins, or more recently my cousins baby, and my own nephew. Having these children in my life has helped me be able to take care of certain situations such as a child being sick, scared, hurt, in a bad mood, and a lot of other situations. Also it has made me gain a lot patients and learn new ways to avoid problems that could possibly occur with all…

    Pediatric Nursing Shortage

The Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN) has been instrumental in advocating for high quality, culturally sensitive, and comprehensive care for children and families. The healthcare needs of pediatric patients present unique challenges due to different developmental stages, limited communication skills, and differences in epidemiology and approaches to treatment as compared to adults. Nurse staffing is a focus of major concern because of the impact of staffing patterns on patient safety and quality of care. The advent of managed care, shortened hospital stays, and public reporting of quality measures demand that healthcare organizations objectively define and assess the quality of care delivered to children and families. Registered Nurses are the primary caregivers within the healthcare setting and are the essential link in assisting patients and families with navigating and humanizing a highly technical and impersonal healthcare system. An organization’s commitment to high quality pediatric care is dependent upon appropriate staffing levels with adequately prepared nurses and the implementation of collaborative, evidence-based practice (Schwalenstocker, Bisarya, Lau, & Adebimpe, 2007). In 2007, members of the Public Policy Committee developed the Safe Staffing Position Statement. This document outlined recommendations for safe and effective nursing care for children and their families. The position statement was recently updated and is intended to serve as the framework to assist organizations providing care to children in the implementation of evidenced based staffing plans to promote high-quality care. It is imperative that schools of nursing, healthcare institutions and pediatric nurses utilize this document as a resource to ensure that appropriate education, training, resources and effective staffing plans are provided to ensure…

Two professions that could be a possibility for someone who loves working with people especially children but also the health career world would be pediatric nurse or physical therapy assistant. Both of these are very rewarding careers and are never the same from a day to day basis, so if you worry about having a job that gets boring after you get the experience you want, there’s nothing to worry about with these because every day there will be something different you are looking at to working with. I personally would like to work in both professions because I think that if one wanted to they would be able to incorporate both professions into an everyday job.…
