For my ethnographic study I chose to examine the life at Moe’s restaurant located one block from my home and where I used to work. The main focus of my study is to compare the norms of the employees when the manager is there and when he is gone. As defined in Sociology: A Brief Introduction, by John J Macionis, a norm is “an established standard of behavior maintained by a society”. How does the employees’ behavior change when the manager is there watching them compared to when she leaves someone else in charge while she is gone. Although the norms of the employees are the main focus of this paper, so are hierarchy and gender roles also play huge roles at Moe’s.…

This quote is about living in the present, not focusing too much on the past or the future. I often struggle with being content in the moment, and I am always looking forward to my next goal, next trip, next adventure. I want to be more present in the moment, noticing the little things like the life in the desert or the stars in the sky, as this quote says. I want to be able to be present as a teacher, appreciating the little ways I am inspired by what my students do, say, and write. I want to be able to appreciate and acknowledge the little acts of empathy, compassion, and kindness I witness in my students, rather than just look forward to summer vacation.…

We could not go outside until six because the warriors of the tribe had to get the fire going, so until then the people congregated while I settled with the idea of all of us sharing the same blood of our ancestors. Once we were outside there sat the magodadamuk, which is what we call the native sweat lodge in my tribe’s language. It was made of old military tarps and next to the lodge sat the fire. The fire was surrounded by stones from the shores of Lake Michigan. To begin, the first part of the ritual is called the water ceremony. During the water ceremony we are praying to what my people call the “Great Spirit”. We all line up before the fire and are blessed with sage. Sage is wafted from our feet to our heads and then in front of our faces as a blessing. We need to be in our purest and most vulnerable state before entering the lodge. This means releasing our bad thoughts and bringing only good thoughts into the sacred…

Furthermore, The constant abuse and misuse of stimulants and enhancements, just to get through a day shows how humans prefer to run from issues, rather than deal with them. Each of these problems contributes to the constant decline in mankind’s efforts towards a much more harmonious world and instead creates a region of terrorized and weak minded children. This trend has been present since the 1930’s when Albert Einstein created that quote previously mentioned. He accurately predicted future outcomes based of the world's progression. The fact that the quote still has some meaning shows that society has not progressed as far as expected and that no matter how advanced technology gets it is still as weak minded as it was 70 years ago.…

Voltaire, an Enlightenment philosopher known for his intelligence and wit, once said “No problem can stand the assault of sustained thinking”. My interpretation of this quote can be explained as follows: although a predicament may seem perpetual, the solution will be unveiled by using persistent, yet intellectual thinking. According to philosophybasics.com, Voltaire was ridiculed as a child because of his own passion for writing, but displayed this practice throughout his own lifestyle as he flourished into a prolific writer and philosopher. Exhibition of his personal quote allowed diverse insights not only from his audience in the past, but also today.…

As we go about our busy lives, going here, there and everywhere like a colony of ants building up supplies for the winter, we never truly take a moment to look at the world around us, stop to smell the roses, to coin a popular phrase. We never seem to take in the sights, sounds, smells and feelings that we often disconnect ourselves from in our obsession to make the world a perfect place. There is hardly a moment that we stop to notice the other people around us that even though we do not know them from Adam, they could enrich our lives without us even knowing it, if we just took the time for a smile and polite hello. These people can remind us that there is a diverse world of goals and aspirations. It is quite amazing where such an event can happen. Going for a daily coffee at a favorite café can bring about this epiphany.…
