Identify, in a sentence or two, the character and the role he or she plays in the novel.
This may be any major or minor character in the novel.

Soraya is Rashid's wife and also Haroun's mother. She leaves her husband with her neighbor Mr.Sengupta, which may be the reason for Haroun's turn of events.

Briefly describe the character and his or her relations with other characters (a solid paragraph or two).
This is a more detailed factual description of your chosen character. You may combine your own factual description with quotations from the text. Give page numbers.

When Soraya is first introduced she was said to have a “sweet voice raised in song” (15). Readers are seemingly given an image of her being a sweet and loving wife and mother.. But things go terribly wrong once she no longer sings (16). It's also evident that Soraya was very vulnerable. She was so tired of being left home while her husband told fictional stories that Mr. Sengupta's criticisms of Rasshid soon enveloped her heart like the darkness of Khattam-Shud. It may be Mr. Sengupta's statement, “what's the use of stories that aren't true?” that finally got to the lonely Soraya (20). Soraya was a ticking time bomb that blew up. Although, just as things had turned around for Rashid and Haroun, Soraya had realized her mistake. Ironically, she described Mr. Sengupta the same as the narrator had described Khattam-Shud. Lover, mother, and wife,

Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie uses the text containing stories that aren’t true as masks and allegories of stories that are true involving symbolic people, places or ideas that exist in the author’s life and provide a manner of communication for Rushdie to publicize his opinions about his standpoint on cultural identity and experiences of hiding in secrecy just for writing a book encompassing his views leading to the conflict between censorship and the freedom of speech. One lesson that Haroun learns throughout the book was that good stories are not a waste of time and that they should be valued highly because they can change people and minds. He knows that his father, Rashid Khalifa, is an excellent storyteller because of his never ending stream of stories he tells, and how each one is as carefully thought out as the last. He loves his father and mother very much, and they live a happy life in a basement of a building in the “sad city.” However when his mother leaves, his father breaks down and his storytelling is thus crippled. When his mother left, she asked Rashid, “What’s the point of telling stories that aren’t even true?” After Rashid has lost his magical ability and Haroun starts disliking him, Haroun knowingly asks him, “What’s the point of telling stories that aren’t even true?” This puts Rashid in a depression even more because now he knows he has lost both his wife and his son. One night when Haroun and his father were on the boat “Arabian Nights plus one” his father and Haroun both were having trouble sleeping, and decided to trade beds. Well, this was fine for Haroun and Rashid because they were able to sleep much better, however the water genie that had come to cancel Rashid’s story subscription was not aware of this. When Haroun awoke to find a water genie, he grabbed his wrench and demanded to know everything. After he realized that his father was indeed subscribed to the sea of stories, he became loyal to him once more and realized that he needed to save the sea of stories from being poisoned in order to keep his father from losing pride, and also to bring him out of his depression. He then realized that storytelling was a true art, and that stories can bring all the goodness in the world to someone even if they are not…
