Background
The Background for this new product innovation stems from the initiative of the New York City Council in 2011 to pass a bill encouraging the development of urban farming, in particular, the construction of rooftop greenhouses and gardens within the city. This Bill eases building restrictions within the city as long as that construction is that of a rooftop greenhouse. Since the passing of this Bill, many cities in many countries around the world have followed suit, this new trend has even included the development of companies specifically tasked to construct rooftop greenhouses, such as ‘Rooftop Greenhouse’ in London. The introduction of these greenhouses aims to utilize the urban renewal technique to greatly reduce the devastating environmental impact that our major cities are having on the world. However, rooftop greenhouses, or ‘green roofs’ have more commercial benefits to the buildings themselves. Green rooftops offer substantial savings to buildings energy costs as well as providing a relaxed and attractive environment for employees, residents, students or visitors of the building.
Within Melbourne, no such developments have occurred, however there is a growing trend, particularly among government agencies, in support of a green roof initiative. With Melbourne Water, Sustainability Victoria, Australia Post and VicUrban all supporting any future plans for green roof development.
Another trend within Melbourne is the success of the Café industry, it is a $5.1 billion industry nationally, with over 6,500 cafes operating across Australia. Of those, roughly 1,500 are within

Going green has its strengths for many companies, the buildings will be more electrically efficient due to better insulation and more efficient machinery and, employees will be happier because they are working in better conditions. A weakness would be if the upgrades are made in the wrong locations; if employees do not experience the benefits of the upgrades it will have little effect on morale. Once opportunities for expansion become available again, procuring buildings that have green technology in place will be additionally advantageous. A major threat to going green is expending too much cash at one time during the upgrade process; this process has to be done…

Inspired by the hills surrounding the city, his design is an undulating roof with lush foliage. The technology he applies in this complicated roof system for drainage and testing new products for rain water filtration, and his selection of native plants creates a super green roof, which has an important role in the ecology of the building and the neighborhood. Even though the large scale of this green roof makes it initially expensive to create and consumes a lot of materials, its energy savings, water efficiency, urban noise reduction, and urban heat island effect reduction are well worth the cost. For me, this article raises the following questions: Do landscape architects always create designs that are worth the time, cost, and effort? If yes, how do they make these designs…

Green roofing is the best alternative to black tar roofs. They include insulation, a waterproof membrane, a barrier to keep roots from creating holes, a drainage layer, a mat for erosion, soil, and finally the plants. Water runoff during rainstorms easily floods the sewers causing people to become ill. But, if building owners were to install green roofs, the plants would retain the water causing less runoff, and also cool buildings by capturing the precipitation and…

It was noted energy consumption can be reduced by using innovative materials and construction methods. For example, with reference to Tour Bois-le-Pretre Transformation, prefabricated balconies were used, which reflect the solar rays and increase ventilation. They minimize the need for heating and cooling (Aaronson, 2012) because of the utilization of reflective solar curtain hangs inside the loose-fit enclosure of the winter garden and a half-inch-thick thermal curtain hangs inside the glass sliding doors (Foges, 2013). In fact, the energy consumption was reduced by 50% after the redevelopment (Aaronson, 2012).…
