Half day on friday
Ten Years Later

It has been ten years since the chance encounter with Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. Roger has grown up and is now twenty five, while Mrs. Jones is just getting older and older. One day they ran into each other in the grocery store. At first, they didn’t realize who the other was. It was only at the end did Roger recognize Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. “Mrs. Jones, is that you?” asked Roger. “Roger?” said Mrs. Jones. “Yes, how are you?” said Roger. “I am good, thank you” said Mrs. Jones, “How are you?” “I am also good, thanks to you.” replied Roger. Mrs. Jones and Roger continued to chit chat as they got what they needed from the grocery store. It was like time was on fast forward. In no time at all, they had what they had come for and were heading towards the cash register. When they finished at the grocery store they started walking back to their cars. They both wanted to stay and talk some more, but their lives called and they had to go their own ways.
Finally, Mrs. Jones said, “so, what going on in your life now?” “Well, I’m married now if that’s what you mean,” said Roger. “Other than that not much has happened since that night ten years ago.” “So you haven’t stolen any other purse?” said Mrs. Jones. “Ha. Of course not,” said Roger.
Mrs. Jones said, “Well, it’s been nice talking to you again, but I have to get this stuff back to the house before it defrosts.”
“Yeah, me too,” said Roger. Roger wanted to say something about that night ten years ago, but he couldn’t, again. Roger progressed to grow old, and he always thought about that night and how it changed his life forever. He didn’t understand then why he didn’t say anything and he never would.

Response: (R) This passage displays the everlasting influence a childhood experience can have on the future of that affected individual. We may believe that a short span of our childhood doesn’t impose any significance to who we are on, yet it’s the other way around. Although, we may not remember the exact details of our experiences, we still have reconciliation of the gist’s of them. Reconciliation, we either have through generations of story-telling or pictures. With the author, Wes Moore, his childhood story was a blessing as compare to the other Wes Moore. The author was able to reminisce on the adventures he had with his father, he was able to properly mourn his father’s death. He was able to properly say, “yes, I had a father. A father…
