I see officers with their Colt M4 Carbine and their Glock 22 out. I notice Officer Johnson. I ask what’s going on? Johnson replies “the school nurse called dispatch and said that there were shots being fired in the office but we have lost contact with her, the first gun shot was at 9:34 AM”. For many, mental health and gun violence seem to go hand in hand. While it seems logical that individuals that perpetrate mass shootings must have some mental illness such as in the case of Adam Lanza who in December 2012 carried out one of the most tragic mass shootings at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown Connecticut. In that shooting Lanza, who was 20 years old at the time, killed his mother then went on to slaughter 6 adults and 20 children between the ages of 6 and 7 and finally taking his own life. (Connecticut Shootings Fast Facts - CNN.com) Lanza had in fact had been diagnosed with having Autism Spectrum Disorder which is characterized by “persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple…

I agree with your perspective regarding our mental health care system. Gun violence's are typically "crimes of passion" and unfortunately, the lack of mental health resources is a huge issue. We have all heard of the unfortunate stories of family members desperately trying to get their loved ones, in a psychiatric crisis, help to no avail. Sadly, both our mental health care system and our gun control system is inadequate due to lack of interest or concern and tragically there are cases when both systems fail (Knopf, 2014). Although, we are aware of the issues, there are still several questions that still need answering. First of all, is there evidence that if an individual is treated appropriately would this advert a tragic event (Knopf,…

In America, people have the rights to keep and bear arms. Parents also have the right as to how they would like to raise their children and how they want to inform them. Americans, also have the right to own guns for their own self-defense. Some people view these ideas in collaboration, and others view these ideas in contradiction. Parents who let their children shoot guns are not bad parents because they are letting their children have some independence and are making them aware of guns and their risks. Even though gun violence is getting very serious in America, children should be able to shoot guns, and nobody should be able to take that away from them.…

According to Gun Violence Archive; a non-profit organization who utilizes its resources to gather statistics to report back to the public to ignite awareness, has recently reported the latest numbers of 2015. It is important to emphasis that GNA is not of support of gun possession but neither deflects from the functionality of gun use in America. This number does not include the 20,000 suicides that have occurred with the use of a firearm in 2015. GVA has reported that 36 Americans lose their lives each day due to gun use, and as of December 2015 a total of 12,942 people have died…
