To have gun control laws or not to have gun control laws that is the question. Recent tragedies involving firearms have sparked up a controversial debate in America. Our president, Barack Obama, has remained “noncommittal” (Grier) as of late but the war rages on with or without him. Peter Grier has thus far remained neutral, but as for me, I have already chosen my answer to the question. Gun control laws would not only leave our law abiding citizens unprotected, but it would also leave those exact same citizens exposed to preventable crimes, and strip us of our second amendment right. First of all, the fact that this is even a topic, in “the best country in the world“, is shameful. Certain precautionary measures have already been established and proven ineffective, the answer to preventing future tragedies is not to create more. Lawmaker’s efforts in the end will once again prove futile. People committing these crimes are obviously criminals and have no disregard for the arbitrary laws lawmakers pass. To put it simply “criminals don’t obey laws”( Ron Paul) Ron Paul is a retired congressman who is against gun control. He believes that Americans are “misguided” because they think that “if we pass the right laws that future horrors like the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting can be prevented.” He is right Criminals will get there hands on a gun with or without

Also, Criminals avoid potentially armed people and target helpless ones. By disarming us Lawmakers are just putting us all at risk. Passing more gun control laws and promoting gun free zones paints a huge red target for criminals. The shooting at Virginia Tech was quickly ended by “two law school students [who] ran to fetch their legally owned

It was just another Friday night at a barber shop in Columbia, S.C. Two men, armed and dangerous, rushed in guns flying, intending to rob the shop. One customer was not about to let it happen. He sat in the barber's chair, hands up until both suspects were not paying attention, when either took their eyes off him he reached for his concealed weapon and fired on the two. As they fled he managed to kill one and the other got away. Thus, none of the customers were injured. With gun violence at an all time high, the people of America are becoming aghast of weapons. Gun owners and their weapons should not be hassled with the thought of change in stricter gun laws.…

When we look at gun-related events, such as a school shooting, or a massacre, our first knee-jerk reaction is to immediately blame guns for the crime. Stricter laws will surely stop those law-breaking criminals, right? As if the time of the writing of the article from procon.org, 49 out of the 62 mass shootings were done with legal guns. At least, that's one less crime committed, right? Would leaving ourselves defenseless while criminals acquire guns illegally instead be a better method protection? My partner and I believe that stricter gun control laws should not be passed, due to the fact that the Constitution protects the right to own guns, criminals who commit crimes with guns would likely not mind breaking another law to acquire said gun,…

In fact, the FBI has released statistics that show that more people are killed by weapons other that guns, such as clubs and hammers. (Stand) If you think that banning guns will take them out of the hands of criminals, you’re mistaken. It has been proven that criminals don’t obey the rules that our society has put into place. They will get their hands on them through the black market, and then because we banned guns law abiding citizens will be defenseless. Imagine this scenario. You’re at Whataburger, a restaurant that has banned guns, enjoying a nice burger with your best friend. You look up from your conversation, and a man has walked in. He is wearing a black ski mask, and your stomach drops. He has an illegal gun, and it’s pointed right at you. “Hands up!” He shouts. No one moves in your defense, they just comply with the masked man’s order. The good people have left their weapons in the car, or at home to respect the company’s decision to have a gun free zone. You’re left at the mercy of this stranger, whose intentions are quite clear. Now imagine if the company hadn’t banned guns in their restaurant. That man sitting in the corner booth has his concealed handgun license, and could’ve stopped the crime as soon as the masked man had walked in. “You can’t blame an inanimate object that’s availability has absolutely no correlation to murder and expect it to end violence.”…

The main idea of stricter gun control is to deter crime rates, but doing this could potentially increase crime rates instead. Not allowing law abiding citizens to own guns will leave them defenseless to criminals that still have access to illegal guns. If criminals know that citizens no longer have guns to protect themselves, they are more likely to attempt that crime on them thus increasing crime rates. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), “Global Study on Homicide,”…

We have freedom and rights that no one can mess with, unless the government bans guns. “The second Amendment to the constitution is limited to protecting the state militia’ right to bear arms” (Buckley1). If we ban our citizens guns then we are violating their right to the second amendment. We will being restricting a form of freedom for them. “The basic right of the american citizen is to bear arms, whether to kill game, or to wound and kill human beings bent on murder or rape” (Buckley1). The right to bear arms is important because of this reason. We can hunt and we can protect our people, without that right the criminals would have the advantage not, not the citizens. “Our founding fathers saw guns to be such an important line of defense…” (Chadduck1). This is why the Second Amendment was made. It is the right of an american citizen to keep a gun for safety reasons. Gun were made to harm the enemies targeting us, so do not take that away from the…

On the contrary, opponents of gun-control laws claim that it is useless to prevent violence by regulating guns. In fact, law-abiding citizens are already permitted to carry concealed weapons in forty states with gun crimes rate remaining the same (Wright). In my opinion, with guns thousands of citizens could save their lives. Just like Jessica, they gain courage because guns are available to them when emergencies occur.…

”Nearly three weeks after the latest mass shooting claimed the lives of nine people, 52% of Americans now oppose stricter gun control laws, 6 percentage points more than the 46% of Americans who support such laws.”(diamond,2015).In the past year, there has been many shootings. If the guns are taken away, some of these could have been solved but that’s only solving one problem. Taking them isn’t helping the helpless people that can’t defend themselves without them.…

Studies show that people who resist a crime committed against them with a gun are less likely to get hurt (Kleck 3). Gun control has been shown to do only one thing, and that is to take the gun out of the hand of a potential victim. Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz wrote, “if self protection with a gun is commonplace, it means any type of gun control that disarms large numbers of prospective victims … will carry significant social cost in term of lost opportunities for self protection” (Kleck 2). Kleck and Gertz also found that in 1982, when interviewing incarcerated felons, 34% had been scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim (Kleck 19). If that many felons are being affected by people using a gun to defend themselves, not only are people successfully defending themselves, the people not reporting this information are basically helping the criminals by letting people think owning a gun and knowing how to use it does not help a victim. The reason people do not know this is because the government does not find it significant enough to report. The reason it is hard to prove that self protection using a gun works is because nobody reports the incident. The criminal, if not caught, does not report it. Also, victims do not report that they used a gun for fear that the police will harass them for using a gun. The government will not put the use of guns for self protection into its statistical model; because it is unwilling to admit that guns are useful for self defense. Guns are useful in preventing crime and they should be allowed on college…

    Banning

Only law abiding citizens would turn in their guns if they were to be banned. Criminals would still have their weapons because they probably already had them illegally anyway; not having anything to protect themselves would leave citizens defenseless. That ultimately could result in an even more dangerous world than it already is. If citizens were to give up their guns how would they protect themselves? What kind of peace of mind is having that paranoid feeling of having to watch your back at all times? It seems as if protecting us from terrorist and the people of our own country is too big of a job for the government, leaving us on our own to protect ourselves. So many murders go unsolved that people are starting to believe that they cannot rely on the government to protect us and that the government probably does not even care about our safety. If we were certain that the federal government had our best interest and were…

As said in “Pro/Con: Gun Legislation”, “‘With just one exception, every public mass shooting in the USA since, at least 1950 has taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns’” (Bito, Dana, Elisa Juliano). Even if one does not feel as safe with many people carrying firearms, they truly are safer. If gun laws are added, it will make it harder for law abiding citizens to obtain guns where as it will be just as easy as it had always been for the criminals to obtain guns illegally. As gun laws are tightened, less people that truly use a weapon for protection will be able to carry a pistol. When this happens, crooks will still be obtaining weapons through illegal ways such as the black market. The criminals would be more feared in the communities and would not be as afraid as before when committing a crime because the threat of anyone carrying a gun would no longer be…

Thomas Jefferson one of our founding fathers once said that “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms only disarm those who are neither inclined or determined to commit crimes”. Gun control laws have been around since the 1800’s ,with the fist law coming into play in 1870.That first law about firearms stated that you would need a license if you wished to carry your firearms outside of your own home and property. Then in the 1900’s a law passed to help insure the safety of other. That law passed in 1903 and it stated that firearms could not be sold to the drunken or the mentally insane and unstable. Evidence has proven that more gun control laws would not be beneficial to the public and would not help reduce the amount of violent crimes being committed with guns.…

There have been numerous occasions where criminals are stopped in their tracks because of a fellow citizens doing his part to curb the problem. The more gun free we are the more at risk we are of allowing ourselves to be unprotected. I for one know the value of a firearm, say I go to Walmart with my son and I’m just shopping. When a crazed teen comes in opening fire on the store, seeing that I’m in Washington State which is an open carry state I can eliminate that threat and save countless life’s including my son. Say I am in a restrictive state like Illinois and I am not allowed to open carry, I have to run and hide just like everyone else. Which usually results in being wounded or being killed. There is absolutely no other way to protect yourself from a gun than from a gun. I want you to ask yourself which side of the argument you’re on now. People say guns are not safe and from a sociological perspective they are not. Why is this the case, I can tell you why because it has been feed to you in the media for years. Guns are bad, guns are violent, and most of all guns kill people. No they do not, it’s time to buck the sociology of gun belief. Guns save lives if you use them properly. Criminals…

One of the most debatable topics in the United States is the availability of guns. The debate on the topic of gun laws focuses on those who believe that owning guns is a Constitutional right while others believe that owning guns is a leading cause of much of the violence within the United States. However, there is a balance between the two debates that will lead to a better conclusion to the topic. Making guns illegal will only lead to criminals possessing illegal firearms while the law abiding citizens will be faced with the threat of criminals with firearms while they have no source of protection. At the same time, the current laws do not require every state to follow laws that would allow for the government to ensure that the firearms do not legally fall into the hands of criminals or those not responsible to own firearms.…

To begin with, taking away a citizens right to bare arms is a violation of the Second Amendment which clearly states, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bare arms, shall not be infringed." The Second Amendment grants citizens the right to bare arms. No legislation should have the right to take away citizen 's fire arms. Gun control violates principals on which our nation was founded. It is out right to own fire arms for protection. New gun control laws would be an intrusion on self defense. Taking away a citizens self defense will not lower crime rates. In many instances new gun laws would increase crime rates. A law was passed in Kenesaw, Georgia requiring citizens to own a fire arm. From there after statistics show the crime rate had astonishingly decreased in Kenesaw, Georgia.…
