The factors that led to the possibility of producing wine in Greece are the presence of the wild Eurasian grape vine, the availability of cereal crops to provide year round food reserves for wine-making communities, and the invention of pottery, instrumental for making, storing, and serving wine. Grapevines were grown alongside olives, wheat, and barley. Moreover, the attempts to store grapes or grape juice for long periods in pottery vessels resulted in wine. Wine was plentiful enough to be widely affordable because the climate and terrain of the Greek islands and mainland were ideal for viticulture. Moreover, educated Romans studied Greek literature and could speak the language, fine Greek statues were brought into Rome, and the Romans carried the intellectual and artistic legacy of the Greeks farther than ever before. On the other hand, Islam believed in abstention from alcoholic drinks as a result of Allah telling Muhammad that wine and games of chance are abominations devised by Satan. The punishment for anyone drinking was forty lashes. Muslims even banned the medical use of wine. Naturally one could connect wine to Dionysus of Greece and Bacchus of Rome. Wine became a luxurious drink that one would drink during a party or while one was relaxing. Also, for the first time the ‘brand’ of a drink mattered. If someone had very good tasting wine he or she was considered to be more well off than one who had a not very good tasting wine.
