Greek Mythology and Nicolas Poussin
On April 26 2013 I visited the Detroit Art Institute. In there I have seen plenty of interesting art sculptures, artifacts, and paintings. The one that really enjoyed the most is “Selene and Endymion” by Nicolas Poussin, a French artist. He made this painting back in 1630. Currently, the painting is in the European paintings exhibit section in the DIA. The painting itself uses oil on canvas for its medium, and the dimensions are: 48 x 66 1/2 inches. The painting is about Selene and Endymion. Selene is a Greek goddess who happens to fall in love with farmer named Endymion. Selene knows Endymion will age and pass away eventually due to him being a mortal, so she asked Zeus to make him immortal to prevent her lover from aging and dying. Zeus accepted the request on the condition that he is put in eternal sleep instead. Endymion loved Selene so much that he was willing to do it in order to be with her forever. Thus the couples wish was granted and Endymion was with Selene, in a slumber forever. The art shows forms by using contours and dynamic elements. The contour of the characters and the background shows surfaces giving it some mass. The picture also shows Helios and Eos moving towards the left side and Endymion kneeling towards Selene, these dynamics gives the picture mass and dimensions. The painting uses a great deal of values as well. On the right side of the painting, it uses a darker value compared to the left side of the painting. This is to show and represent day, dawn, and night on the art picture. Another use of values is used to show the distances in the background. As we can see the deities Eos and Helios are in a darker shade compared to Endymion and Selene, this is to show the distances between them. Lastly, the painting use values to show shadows and mass, giving the picture forms and dimensions. Time itself is used as another visual element. The art uses time as a way to capture a moment in time. As mentioned before, we see Helios and Eos

This painting is one in a series to honor women and comment on their "place" in pre-revolutionary China. As courtesans and prostitutes they are elevated in the artist's hands, isolated in a field of paint, accompanied by emblems and images from classic Chinese paintings. Characters for Nu Wa, a Chinese creation goddess are painted over her groin. Nu-Wa was the inventor of marriage and made humans by slinging a rope. The hand made meant that it was noble, and made with rope stood for poor. The multiple circles around the painting means Pi in the Chinese language, which translated means universe and it’s surrounding the women in the painting. The thing that stands out the most is the red square in the middle of the painting. This means female in Chinese and makes sense since its on the women’s groin I think this painting means uniformity and creation of people. The giant butterfly in the painting can stand for multiple things such as change, joy, and love. Also can show a feminist side to the women in the painting make her look innocent.…

    Neoclassical Art Analysis

This masterpiece was created by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres in 1814 and is perfect example of Neoclassicism which was the revolt of the Rococo style of art. The artwork is placed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. This painting captures the image of an odalisque, which we refer to as a concubine. The painting depicts beautiful hues of blue, and a dark background and shadows which creates a seductive scenery while enhancing the curves and shapes of the model. With the contrast of light and dark colors, Ingres was able to achieve the illusion of depth. Ingres favored long sinuous lines which is show through the way he painted her elongated back. The volumes of the nude, bathed in an even light, are toned down in a space without depth (Louvre). I also like the details of his work, from the detailed headpiece, jewelry, feather duster and even the designs strategically placed on the curtains. Ingres was highly criticized for his art work and his paintings were unpopular due to others not understanding his…

The primary subject matter of the painting, Venus and Cupid, is Venus, the Goddess of Love. Artemisia Gentileschi seems to portray powerful women for example Judith, Susanna, Cleopatra, and Danäe, depicted either as heroines or victims in the paintings. Cupid is also important in this painting, him being the son of Venus, he seems to be portraying the image of an overseer or a protector while Venus seems to be freely sleeping. (“Venus and Cupid”)…

    Hall Of the Bulls, Lascaux

This magnificent painting dates back to Lascaux, France 15,000-13,000 B.C.E. It was found on cave walls and it is said to represent one of the earliest examples of artistic expression. We can see that this piece was created during the Paleolithic period because; they are images walls using paint on limestone. We can see that the primitive people used natural rock contours, which suggested the animal’s volumes and portrayed real representations of a major role in their lives, which were the animals. We can see horses, bulls, deer, cows and more animals on the walls of these caves. Furthermore, the images of the animals are overlapping earlier illustrations; this would suggest that what made the people at the time want to paint the animals was the simple act of portraying them, instead of focusing on the effect that their act would achieve. On the religious part of this piece, we know that several of the paintings were situated far from the entrance of the caves. This type of placement followed by the gigantic size and great importance of them would tell us that the secluded rooms were used for ceremonial and sacred gathering places. I would have to agree with this interpretation due to the fact that it is believed that main use of the caves was for worship and initiation rituals.…

For my analysis, I chose a painting by Jean Ingres called “Jupiter and Thetis”. It is a reflection on the roman myth of Jupiter (Zeus in Greek mythology). The myth behind the painting is important to understand before you try to analyze it. In the myth, Thetis, a goddess of the sea, heard a prophecy that said she was destined to bear a son greater than his father. This made him a threat to many people due to his father being a very powerful man.…

This statue follows a common theme about the Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses, which have always had an intriguing amount of drama. This in which gave the sculptors and artists of many decades time to express these feelings throughout their work. This particular sculpture is done by Antonio Canova about the story of Psyche and how Cupid awoke her with a kiss after completing tasks put forth to her by Venus. With a undeniable theme of “Lust” or “Love”, this piece most definitely had caught my eye. Just another girl getting caught up in those mushy love stories!…

She looks to be alone; she looks to have been left behind. The sun seems to be setting, and she is still waiting. The painting is based on myth “Theseus and the Minotaur”, a myth about a hero from Athens who is missioned to slay a beast but couldn’t do it without the help of the King’s daughter. In this painting God is depicted as an elderly white-bread man wrapped in a swirling cloak while Adam, is in the lower left and is completely nude while sitting on a large boulder. God’s right arm is extended to impact the spark of life from his own finger into Adam whose left arm is extended in pose mirroring God. Adam appears to be completely nude sitting on what seems to be a rocky hill God and Adam’s finger are not touching which gives the impression that God is reaching out to Adam and Adam is receiving. God is surrounded by many females; they are wrapped around his whole body.…

    Diana and Endymion

Diana, Endymion and one of his dogs are in the center of the painting. It seems most of the focus is on Endymion because his whole body is visible and in the light. Diana's upper body can be seen but her lower half is faded out to black. The other dog is in the bottom left corner. It is very dark so you can only see his head, mostly his eyes and nose. The lines of Endymions staff, left forearm right leg and Diana's right forearm all lead the viewer from various points at the edge of the painting to their two heads. That is the cornerstone of the story. Endymion is lying on the ground asleep propped up against a boulder. His two dogs are at his feet both are sitting up. It appears that Diana is coming down to him from out of the sky. The position of her head and shoulders make her look as if she is floating because I think it would be hard to stand in such a way. The figures take up most of the painting leaving little room for the background.…

The painting portrays four young, beautiful, playful, nymphs teasing a satyr by pulling him into a pond they were assumingly bathing in as “one nymph waves behind to three other nymphs in the distance, perhaps beckoning them to come and play with the satyr as well.”(ARC,2018) .Nymphs are from Greek mythology where they are known as minor deities who protect the different elements of nature such as streams, mountains, and meadows. Satyrs, their male counterparts, also from Greek mythology but having the face and torso of a man, tail and ears of a horse, and feet of a goat are known for being lustful and fertile creatures who can’t swim. This painting captures movement in a way you can feel the pull of the teasing nymphs and the lean of the satyr as one foot is already in the water while still being intrigued by their beauty. This oil painting is so attentive it “is nearly photogenic in it refined technique and attention to detail” (Fichner-Rathus, 2013) you can see the grip of the nymph on the satyrs’ bicep, the contour of the satyrs’ and nymphs’ muscles, also the blades of grass, and where the water and starts. The great patience and “his careful approach to his work meant he was able to show us the female human form in such a way that was both pleasing and accurately rendered.” (William...org, n.d.). In 1901-1942 the painting was bought and was…

    Favorite Piece of Art

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
