Great Project Benefits
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(London, UK) The Great Projects (www.thegreatprojects.com) announces a 15 percent discount on all bornean orangutan volunteer projects for the month of November. They chose to do so as a way to celebrate Orangutan Awareness Week, which ran from November 9-15, 2015, and is designed to celebrate the Great Apes while raising awareness of their plight. Individuals who wish to learn more about volunteering with these amazing animals find The Great Projects provides a great way to do so.

"Experts estimate there are less than 61,000 orangutans left in the wild. Unless changes are made, this number is expected to continue to decline, with poaching, the illegal pet trade and deforestation being a few of the causes of this decrease.

Brown and her colleagues have found that older individuals improve their physical and psychological well-being along with those they help. Volunteering helps increase a person's relationship satisfaction, reduces depression associated with the loss of a partner and manages stress.

"Individuals who have been thinking of volunteering should definitely do so, as these benefits are observed even when a person's medical history is taken into consideration. With the discount currently being offered, an individual can do so and save money. Not only will the physical and psychological effects be seen, but the person will have a sense of pride, knowing they have done something to help these incredible animals," Starbuck continues.

Participants in an experience of this type find they expand their horizons in numerous ways. In addition to working with amazing animals, each volunteer has the opportunity to pick up a new language and try new foods. They also get to live amidst a different culture and humans with different customs. Many also find they benefit in terms of their career when they volunteer

The Eastern Gorilla faces many challenges due to the destruction of its habitat and poaching. The Eastern Gorilla is the largest living primate and has now joined three other great ape species as critically endangered on The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s red list of endangered species. This is extremely worrying to many government and environmental leaders because there are only about five thousand Eastern Gorillas left in the wild. Furthermore, of all of the great ape species- the Eastern Gorilla, Western Gorilla, Bornean Orangutan, Sumatran Orangutan, Chimpanzee, and Bonobo- only the Chimpanzee and Bonobo are not considered critically endangered; however, they are listed as endangered.…

Pan troglodytes also known as chimpanzees, are amazing great apes who share 96% of our DNA, making them our closest living relatives. They are very intelligent and display that they are closely related to humans by their tool making and use, cooperate and learn from each other, and learn in various forms of expression and communication. Today there are around 300 thousand chimpanzees in the wild and 2,000 captive in the United States; out of those 2000, 850 are in laboratories, 600 in sanctuaries and 250 in private hands. (savethechimps.org). That lists chimpanzees as endangered species, rapidly decreasing in numbers. Being that chimpanzees are wild animals, their natural instincts are wild. On April 24th I attended Stony Brook’s annual Earthstock celebration with Golden Key, the club I am. Earthstock is an event held to spread awareness of why we should protect our environment. It also gives examples of how to conserve our planet in various ways. While there were many tables with different themes at Earthstock, our table allowed for whoever wanted to stop by, to plant their own seeds. Participants then got to bring home their newly planted seeds with hopes that they will grow into a beautiful flower to put in their garden. One of the other tables I spent a lot of time with was the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. This table attracted me due to the furry animal that was there. I got to meet the little guy who was a rescued opossum. The organization told me he was two years old and that they had saved him from his mother’s pouch after she was hit by a car. He was very sweet and cute and anyone was allowed to pet him.…
