Though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain."

It seems to me, when we look back at our years at Thomas Middle School, we will have many of the same feelings.

Who can forget Rory getting stuck in a mudpit at Loredo Taft? Mr. G's inspired reading of "The Tell Tale Heart?" When Mr. B electrocuted the whole classroom? Or getting the chance to pie a teacher when we adopted a family at Christmas?

Certainly, we will remember these specifics and little flashes of others, like Kodak moments frozen in time, to return perhaps when we least expect them.

Suddenly, we were the bosses of the school, hallways and busses, or so we imagined. We were all-powerful and in control of our lives. We got excited about our mock election which mirrored both Channel One and the national results. We were on every team, in every club and in every student government position available. Some were in music, others in sports, and some industrial tech. I was the villain in the musical and we all will remember Beau conning his way through Iowa as the Music Man.

These middle school years have brought us many personal changes as well. Our parents give us more freedom than we had before. We have cell phones, we shop for ourselves, and we get to go trick-or-treating with our friends and without parental supervision. We have also reached puberty, which brings our attention to the opposite sex, and the loud, dark dances in the commons where we guys asked girls to dance for the first time. Many of us have even started dating that mysterious person at lunch who has been smiling at us all year. We've experienced growth spurts, zits and the occasional anonymous love note, and I suspect that it is only the beginning for all of those

At Damien Memorial School, what makes us different, unites us. We may all look the same on the outside due to our uniforms, but we are all different people on the inside. According to Cheryl Mizerny, she describes as one of her favorite reasons why she loves the fact that while “teaching middle school is never the same day twice. Sometimes, it’s not even the same from the beginning of class until the end depending on what drama has erupted in the interim” (2015). Knowing that a middle school student’s day will never will be the same compared as the rest. However, it’s the jobs of the middle school teaching staff and admission to help the students through this confusing life journey called middle school. The change that occurs from middle childhood to adolescence is arguably one of the most profound changes that children go through. Not only do children change physically but emotionally. “Adolescence is the transitional period between late childhood and the beginning of adulthood, and marks the beginning of the reproductive lifespan in humans. Adolescence involves sexual maturity in terms of hormones and physical development of the body, and is also characterized by an increase in the complexity of group interactions and thus social behavior (Lerner and Steinberg, 2004)”. During this time of transition many develop a stronger sense of self and begin to separate from completely…

Middle school years are in your memory for a long time, especially the great times. Being in middle school for 3 years has changed many people. As middle schoolers, our newfound title as “teenagers” or "preteens" is something we don’t fully understand. We begin to realize that people are diverse in so many ways, but our lack of maturity makes us believe that being different is bad. We are told to get mature and quick in just a short span of time that we cannot even digest what mature means. Suddenly school is no longer the friendly playground; instead, it is a jungle in which we are deciding our friends based on the fact to be socially acceptable. I will always remember middle school as three long years of trying to establish my character,…
