Of course, as you have guessed, the good reader is one who has imagination, memory, a dictionary, and some artistic sense--which sense I propose to develop in myself and in others whenever I have the chance”. (Vladimir Nabokov)I believe that Vladimir’s Nabokov’s opinion of imagination stringent as they may be are good comparison or contrast to Welty’s because they are both intense interpretations of creating solid reading tools explanations of their opinions and experiences on how to read in their…
Neil Gainman told us that reading fiction is reading for pleasure that is one of the most important things everyone can do (Gainman, 2013). For him the fiction has two uses , first , “It’s a gateway drug to reading” (Gainman, 2013, p.8), and second, “to build empathy” (Gainman, 2013, p.15).…
The main distinction between these two groups is whether they distance their personal vagaries from the reading of a text or not. Lewis stresses that those who don’t bother with trying to become an ideal reader may nevertheless be lovers of reading, while the so-called…

My literary analysis will focus on the comparison between the short story “Good People” by David Foster Wallace and the contemporary film “For Keeps” written by Denise DeClue and Tim Kazurinksy. “Good People” and “For Keeps” feature two young unwed couples who are forced to face the reality of unprotected sex. With the unexpected conception of a child, both couples struggle to make the disheartening decision of abortion.…
After reading the article, “Reading Like a Writer”, it made me aware of my reading behaviors. Just like the text, I read to try to understand what the author is attempting to portray. However, what I am doing differently is only reading for information. What the text suggests that readers do is to ask yourself why the author used that method of writing, whether it's persuasive, ironic, or dramatic. Additionally, the author recommends that you discover who the intended audience is; this will benefit you because it makes you understand why the author used this style of writing.…
In my honest opinion, when you first handed us The Longman Reader I thought to myself how boring this book looks. They always say you can’t judge a book by it's cover, but I sure did. I’m not a big fan of reading books since I don’t have much free time. The font in this book is very petite compared to other book. As I was reading this first chapter I was asking myself why someone put such simple steps in a checklist in the book.…
Kimberly is a sweet and hardworking student. She is very enthusiastic about reading and love fairytale books. Kimberly struggles with reading from the beginning of the year. The area of phonics specifically had been the hardest part of the reading process for her. The Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) was administered on April 18th and helped as a diagnostic tool to make proper decisions and develop further an intervention plan for the student. She was struggling with the word list form the QRI assessment. She identified 12 words and scored 60 percent of a 100%. It was difficult for her to focus because her attention span is very short. Some words she was unfamiliar with or difficult to decode. It was easy to see the frustration when we…
6) “Most professional students of literature learn to take in the foreground detail while seeing the detail reveals. Like the symbolic imagination, this is a function of being able to distance oneself from the story, to look beyond the purely affective level of plot, drama, characters. Experience has proved to them that life and books fall into similar patterns. Nor is this skill exclusive to English professors.” pg.4…
For years child abuse has occurred in real life, and continues to happen in today’s society. David Klass brings up this issue in his novel “You don’t know me”. The setting of the novel takes place at John’s home, and in his school. It begins with the main character named John, who is an emotionally and physically abused boy that feels misunderstood and alone. David Klass uses John as a troubled teenager to show a realistic depiction of how abuse can and does happen.…
In the newsletter, ‘Getting our future back on the rails- slowly’, that was received by households in the local area; the writer emphasizes the need for change and promotes the idea of sustainable living through community action. The direct, persistent tone serves to assert the notion that the community would greatly benefit by a shared garden. The proposal contains 3 images of which all support the writer’s philosophy. Commonly, all are directed to the reader through techniques of fear tactics and consistent use of hyperbole. The newsletter aims to persuade readers through tactics of: appealing to sense of security, use of evidence and involvement of readers through inclusive language.…
Throughout my writing career, I have observed several aspects with the potential to shape any writer’s success. Among the elements, the most influential of them is the English course in which the student enrolls. Moreover, English courses hold influence over a student’s life in that they have a responsibility to either advance or reduce the writer’s skills. The progress in my writing development began when English II guided me through noticing worth in my writing, finding pride in a strength, and appreciating positive aspects of the course.…
My writing has many flaws I have known that since I started writing. But out of all the problems that I have always had, the one that bothers me the most is that I know I am not producing the best work I can possibly get out. I have always been confident in my thoughts and ideas, but every time I starting writing them down they never seem to be able to go the way I want them to go.…
