Innocence and the Powers of Good and Evil: An Analysis of Night Watch
Introduction
“Those who improve with age embrace the power of personal growth and personal achievement and begin to replace youth with wisdom, innocence with understanding, and lack of purpose with self-actualization” (Bennett). Innocence can by defined in many ways. Some believe that it is the lack of corruption, others believe that it is a lack of understanding, and some think it means that a person accused of a crime is not guilty. Everybody starts out innocent, and that innocence is lost with the development of maturity. The quote above was written by Bo Bennett in his book, Year to Success. The quote’s basic meaning is that people mature and become smarter and more

Despite being born in Kazakhstan, he is a Russian fantasy writer ("Biography"). He currently has a wife, Sonya, and two children. He attended college to become a therapist. In 1996, Lukyanenko moved to Moscow, Russia, where he started his writing career. He found it hard to write at first and was in a "Science Fiction ghetto" ("Biography"). He finally broke through that "ghetto" with the publication of Night Watch, one of his most popular and most memorable books. According to his biography, the success of Night Watch was due to the revitalization of the Russian movie industry. Sergei Lukyanenko has released two movies out of the Watch series, Night Watch and Day Watch (IMDb, "Sergei Lukyanenko"). These movies have undoubtedly added to the success of his writings. Lukyanenko has received 37 awards for his writings, with most being due to the Watch series ("Awards"). He has many influences, and "Lukyanenko himself said that his work has been heavily influenced by that of Robert A. Heinlein, the Strugatsky brothers, and Vladislav Krapivin" ("Biography").
Although no official time period was given in Night Watch, it is reasonable to estimate that the story took place in the 1990s since the book was released in 1998 ("Russian Edition"). The story also mentions the Sony Walkman, a popular music player at this specific time period. The 1980s and 1990s were periods of high conflict involving the Soviet Union (Ries). At this time, the

In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel many of our constitutionally given rights were not given to the prisoners in the concentration camp. Many of their rights, belongings and family were taken away from them and their world as they knew it. The concentration camps were very brutal and different than normal society. They were taken away from their homes and families were separated by boys and girls and young and old. Anyone who was unable to work was sent straight to the crematorium. Therefore many of the people found themselves depressed with no will to live anymore.…

Development is a lifelong process. It incorporates the biological, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual growth of people. Our genetic make-up, culture, society, and experiences are the factors that influence our developmental growth. The developmental stages that this book touched basis on were middle adulthood and old age. According to Erik Erikson, there are eight stages of psychosocial development. This book portrays the last two: Generativity vs. Stagnation (middle adulthood) and Integrity vs. Despair (old age). A theory of this development is that the tasks accomplished in one stage lay a foundation for tasks in the next stage of development (McLeod, 2008).…

When assessing youth and adolescence, innocence plays a major part in one’s mind. Innocence. A word in which one could argue indefinitely along with the word “war”. An aura of innocence is not only found in the souls of young soldiers, but is also found in every brave soul of anyone who has ever served or are serving for our country. This powerful word of “innocence” is relatable towards the young troopers because they are the inexperienced newcomers with minor knowledge of what actuality is to come. Recent research has found a significant difference in a teen’s brain versus an adult’s. In fact, the rational part of a human brain is technically not fully developed until one reaches the age of 25 or so. With being partially developed, it raises…

As we grow up , we first start off as being children who love to play at the park, play with toys and act crazy then , as time goes by we grow into mature adults where we realize all the silly things we did back when we were little kids were very immature and how know we have to face the real world. Hold Caufield is incorrect to say that people should keep living as if they were still children because childhood innocence was when we were children and now since we are young adults or just adults we should know how to act in a mature manner and not still have out childhoon innocence while were in out adulthood .…

I found the quote in my epigraph to be very accurate; how can one become old and wise if they aren’t first “young and stupid”? Kids, teenagers and young adults tend to go against their parents’ words of wisdom to do what they believe will be fun, change their beliefs in politics and religion, and believe the idea of thinking they know everything, but they really don’t. I know this from experience, and a common example is when asking for permission to go do something stupid because everyone else is doing it, parents often say “If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?”, even though it is tempting to say yes, we answer no because us young people really know that our parents are actually correct. When young people become older and…

Have you ever heard of a highly interactive, multiplayer online game called World of Warcraft, or “WoW”? You probably have heard of it, but have you ever wondered why people are so enchanted by this particular game? What could be so special about it? If you have ever asked yourself these questions, you are not alone. Author of My Life as a Night Elf Priest, Bonnie A. Nardi, sheds light on some of these subjects through not only interviewing players of WoW, but by living the experience herself. However, before she even begins to play, she must attain a fresh mindset. She accomplishes this by breaking down barriers, including stereotypes that people may already have of WoW players. As a beginner of the game, she gets to learn the aspects of…

I agree with this quote; only because I do think that everyone’s perspective is different. Two people can see an apple on a table and think two completely different things. Which are normal, people tend to interpret things in different ways due to past experiences or important events that have occurred in his/her lifetime. It could have been traumatizing or very beneficial towards a person. I guess you can say a person who has more experience tend to have a more educated outlook on ideas. But young people are known for making mistakes, due to lack of experience.…
