Determining the factors that influence an industry is a basic step to analyse the study which helps to develop competitive advantage in the market. Through potters generic strategies it can be analysed how British petroleum differentiate in the market as compared to its competitors which makes an appeal to their valuable customers on the basis of their quality, innovation and responsibilities achieved.Analysis of the Competitive Environment of British Petroleum

This paper is basically about the analysis of British Petroleum PLC (Bp). The analysis covers the competitive environment of the company in terms of its stance in the midst of its competitors and also how attractive the industry is in which the British Petroleum company belongs to. Apart from the competitive environment, this report also identifies the key business strategies of the company and also the various resources and capabilities of the company that has given the company an edge over it other competitors.

The aim of this paper is to link up the competitive environment of Bp with its strategy and also pointing out the competences upon which Bp has based its strategy on by measuring the fitness of the company’s strategy to its resources and capabilities over the past years.

In analyzing Bp’s competitive environment, business strategy and identification of the various resources and capabilities, the following frameworks will be used; porter five force, strategic groups, porter’s generic strategies, Resource Based view (RBV) and value chain analysis and the strategic fit.

2.0 BRIEF OVERVIEW OF BRITISH PETROLEUM (BP)

Bp is one of the world's largest energy companies and also one of the largest vertically integrated oil and gas companies in the world which means it involved with the extraction, production and also retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday use to different customers.

    Despite unnecessary changes to plot and some flawed character portrayals, Nicholas Hytner’s 1996 film adaptation of Arthur Miller’s 1953 play, The Crucible, is overall a viable adaptation of Miller’s original work. Many of the directorial changes made by Hytner in creating this screenplay are successful in further emphasising Miller’s central ideas. The characterisation of Abigail Williams is captured appropriately in the film displaying her overall manipulative nature by drawing extensively on the original text, thus exploring Miller’s idea of the use of hysteria and rumour in order to seek personal vengeance. Hytner’s depiction of Salem is well represented and the use of space, both outdoor and indoor, helps to visually depict Miller’s idea of the blur between the public and private world. Furthermore, Miller’s use of symbolism within The Crucible is integral in reinforcing Salem’s governing theocracy and this is well demonstrated in the film adaptation. It is inevitable that there are some flawed elements of Hytner’s version of The Crucible, yet ultimately the film is successful in retaining and conveying Miller’s key concepts, in a way that is easy for the audience to understand.…
