A Description of the Graduate Record Examination
About GRE®
GRE® (Graduate Record Examination) is the name of a globally recognized test designed and conducted by ETS (Education Testing Services) for obtaining admission to the Masters & PhD degree programs in mainly US universities as well as in several Canadian universities and universities across the globe. Founded as a nonprofit organisation in 1947, ETS develops, administers and scores more than 50 million tests annually — including the TOEFL® and TOEIC® tests, the GRE® tests and The Praxis Series™ assessments — in more than 180 countries, at over 9,000 locations worldwide.
GRE® is also now accepted by several universities in many countries in place of GMAT to obtain admission in their MBA & other Masters degree programs in Management. It tests knowledge of reading, writing and mathematics. The syllabus of Math & English is basic. Any student who has completed his high school can easily score high by joining the “GRE® Test Preparation Classes at IICHE”. The syllabus & test structure of GRE® is given in detail in one of the questions below written as “Test Structure of GRE”
Types of GRE® : There are two types of GRE®: GRE® revised General test also popularly called as GRE® & GRE® Subject Test. GRE subject test is used by very few universities for granting admissions. Universities usually use GRE® Subject Test for granting admission to the PhD program (sometimes for MS programs also) in Mathematics, Physics, Biological Sciences, English Literature, Psychology, Chemistry, etc. On the other hand, large number of universities do NOT use GRE® Subject Test for granting admission to the PhD program in the above mentioned fields of studies.
Formats of GRE® : Two formats of GRE® revised General test are available : The computer based & The Paper based. Paper based format is available in only a very few countries. In India, only Computer Based GRE® is available.
Who takes GRE® & When ? : Engineers, Architects, Doctors, Dentists, Biotechnologists, Science
