Global Citizen

Nowadays I often meet the term "Global Citizen" in newspapers, magazines and television, but who exactly is a global citizen? I see a Global Citizen as someone who has a sense of their own role as a world citizen, respects and values diversity and other cultures, takes responsibility for their actions, has a desire to make this world better. More than 2,400 years ago the philosopher Socrates claimed: “I am not an Athenian or a Greek, but a citizen of the world.” And I believe that he was absolutely right. It’s not important for Global Citizen what your nation is or your social status, he is interested in what kind of person you are. I consider that the examples of a good Global Citizen are volunteers. We can find them everywhere. I liked their rule: “Live, helping each other”. Volunteerism is the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in the community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward (Collins English Dictionary). I'm sure that people, who are engaged in social work, have all the qualities of Global Citizen. But their most amazing trait is to give: their time, energy, love and good spirit. They are not pop stars or famous actor, they just ordinary people, who find time to do something good. I've always had a fear of working with disabled children. I felt sorry for them. I was frightened by their appearance, unpredictable behavior. But when I became a volunteer, I had to work with them. This experience has changed my attitude to them. I no longer fear these children. Most of them are very cheerful people; they are not afraid of difficulties and are not giving up. In this situation, an example of demonstrating my quality of a Global Citizen is realizing and understanding that differences are ok. The differences are not a reason to avoid someone, it makes communication more interesting.
