The Manual

What’s the point if an automatic will do all of the thinking for you? Yes, an automatic transmission calculates the gear ratios and does the shifting for you but where’s the fun in that? That’s like playing a video game that shoots all of the targets for you. Driving a manual transmission is having full control over one of the world’s most powerful machines. Wouldn’t you want better gas economy without sacrificing horsepower? The beauty of a stick is that you don’t have to. You have full control over how much gas your giving your engine, and you get to decide how fast you want to accelerate at all times. Have you ever had to replace a transmission? I have, and let me tell you it’s

SAFTY FIRST – Know your car.
When you first get into a vehicle with a stick shift you’ll notice an additional pedal all the way to the left. What’s this one do? That’s your clutch. Simply put, the clutch cuts off power to your engine allowing you to switch gears. When your clutch is all the way in your basically in neutral, so although your engine is spinning, it is no longer connected to your wheels. The clutch is used with only your left foot; the gas and break are used, as usual, with your right foot. When you first get into the vehicle press the clutch down all they way and make sure you can reach it comfortably.
Your gear selector has been replaced with a manual shifter. With your right hand you’ll want to practice going through your shift patterns so you get a feel for where all of your gears are. Press the clutch all the way in and go to first, then second, then third, fourth, and fifth. The gears are lined up in an H pattern. When the car is not in gear you should be able to wiggle your shifter; this is neutral. You may also want to locate your parking break and always make sure its up when you’re no longer driving.

Push the clutch all the way down and slide your shifter into the first gear position. In order for you to catch first gear and begin moving smoothly you need to find the friction point in your clutch. The friction point is where your clutch actually catches the gear you’ve selected. To find this, use your ankle and slowly flex your foot upwards and start to depress the clutch. Since we haven’t given the car any gas the engine will stall out, but you want to remember where you had the clutch right before the car shut off; that is your friction

If the car had no drivetrain it could not drive, and the owner would be forced to push the car everywhere. A car’s drivetrain contains the engine, transmission, and driveshaft. The name Boss 302 was given by Ford because they used a 302 ci engine in the Mustang. The engine placed in the Boss 302 was given a little bit extra. Ford gave the engine a four valve carburetor to help the engine produce 290 horsepower and 290 foot pounds of torque. The transmission is another key component in the drivetrain. The transmission’s main purpose is to shift the gears and keep the engine’s RPMs low. The car’s transmission is powered by the crankshaft of the engine. In 1970 the standard transmission for a Boss 302 was a 4-speed manual, but one could opt out and choose to have an automatic. The last major part of the drivetrain is the driveshaft. Without a driveshaft the car’s wheels would be unable to move. The driveshaft of the car is attached to and controlled by…

In 2004 a group of scientists found the partial skeleton of a new human species we had never seen before. Researchers called the remains LB1, also nicknamed the hobbit due to its small size. It was first believed that this new species, Homo floresiensis, was a descendent of Homo erectus that had simply dwarfed over time due to limited access to resources. However, newer studies have highlighted some of the more primitive characteristics of LB1, which lead scientists to believe that the hobbits branched off from the human family tree much earlier than previously thought.…

The Genre: You’re familiar with the book and movie reviews that appear in newspapers, magazines, and websites. They are just one kind of evaluative writing, but from them we can identify the key components of the genre. First, there is the object to be evaluated. Often this is a single thing—a music CD, a scholarly study, a corporation—but it can also be an idea or process: the impact of a particular band on rock history, the importance of a new trend in scholarly opinion, or the management practices used by a particular sector of industry. Second, there are the criteria…
