Gerber Analysis
Question 1 I found an article which compares the market share of each and also mentions that Yahoo is powered by Bing so they will provide the same results as one another only with cosmetic differences. http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_17859844?nclick_check=1 And from an initial test, this is pretty much true. I did a test search for the words “coral reef” and in both search engines the first page of results were identical, whereas Google had a different set of results. It’s hard to identify what features are new with each search engine, but I do remember Google’s “instant” feature being relatively new. I personally have a mixed opinion of this feature, because on one hand you can see the results as you type, but on the other hand it can sometimes lag the browser as the ajax page is trying to refresh in real-time as you type. I found a website that indicates that Bing has a new music streaming feature, and it is pretty nice. I can type in the name of a band or a song and at the bottom of the page there are one click links to just listen to part of the track. Yahoo doesn’t appear to have much as far as new recent features, but doing a search for new yahoo features through yahoo indicates that they are promoting a customization feature, but if I’m not mistaken that has been around for years. As for a comparison of each search engine, I tend to prefer Google the most. The reasons why are quite extensive. For starters, even Microsoft themselves have admitted that they can’t keep up with the number of pages that Google has indexed. However it is worth noting that search engine optimizers, who tend to pollute search results, target Google more than Bing, so Bing’s organic search results can at times be better.
Another reason is that Google has a large set of web applications that meld well with their search engine, and in extension, to my Android smartphone. For example, my calendar app syncs from my phone with Google, and from the Google’s main

Industry Background Search engine companies haven’t been around for very long with most of them coming into existence in the mid 1990’s. Many of these companies are already gone or in a state of gobbling each other up to compete with the bigger companies. Yahoo seems to be the grandfather of the currently existing crop starting in 1994. The growth in Internet usage and the amount of data being made available has made accurately and quickly finding that data more important. The search companies and search engine strategies have become very important to webmasters and company marketing strategies due to the desire of companies to have their products and services appear at the top of the list and on the most used search sites. The methodologies that a company uses for searching is highly confidential. Some search companies get its search crawler data from Google, for instance Yahoo did this for a while and now AOLSearch is “enhanced” by Google. The companies earn their money in a variety of ways but primarily it is paid advertising that is the bread and butter of this industry. Google, Inc. Background Google Inc. has gone from literally a garage company started in 1998 by two Stanford University computer science graduate students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, to a forward thinking firm that employs over 10,000 people today. The two actually met in 1995 and began formulating their initial ideas on searching which they tried to sell. When no interest was garnered for it, they decided to form Google and presented their search methods at a World Wide Web conference in 1998 and by 1999 had $30 million in funding from a variety of means. Google went public in 2004 raising $1.6 billion. Google is so “big” it has become a new word in the English language meaning; to search for information on the Internet, esp. using the…

In short, Google is trying to position itself for the day when people won’t automatically use a Google search box to find information. Keith Woolcock, founder of 5thColumnIdeas, a technology research firm, doubts Google is up to the task, saying, “The problem for me as an investor is that Google looks a little too [much] like last year's model. It’s the chicken in the sandwich—Apple and Facebook are on the opposing sides. Google is in the middle. Really, it looks to me as though it has become the…
