Georgia O Keeffe: Painting Analysis
The artist I had chosen for my PowerPoint presentation was Georgia O’Keeffe. The first example of her work is Easter Sunrise was made in 1953 and is an oil on canvas painting. Easter Sunrise depicts a mountain side and shining from the corner of the mountain is a brilliant white cross. As far as the technical excellence of this painting, the colors are varying degrees of browns, gold and white. Georgia O’Keeffe uses form really well. Even though she uses one mountain as the main focus, in the background there are other mountains and road leading into the distance. In the forefront of the painting there are trees and the road. I think that balance is more informal or asymmetrical because of the main focus of the one mountain, but somehow …show more content…
I think the form used here is alright. Though there is not much detail in the background especially behind the house and the big tree, it appears that O’Keeffe did a good job. The balance looks informal because of the big tree and the house taking up a lot of the watercolor. There are a few little trees in front of the house and big tree. I think the validity of this watercolor is that O’Keeffe was true to herself. It looks a little weird because it doesn’t look like her later work of the desert. Since it is her early work, I think at the time, she was being true to herself and her worldview. The intellectual content I would say, it looks like it could be a Christian worldview. Also House with Tree - Green looks like it is simply made. Since it was O’Keeffe’s early work and also made with watercolors, I think it shows she can grow more as an artist. The integration of content and vehicle of this watercolor is how she managed to create a beautiful watercolor of a house and the surrounding trees. I like how O’Keeffe has created this early in her career especially with watercolors. I think that it says something to her artistry that so early in her career that she enjoys landscapes and nature scenery and how she manages to continue on with it through

As one moves further away from the “Table” towards the background in the right corn you’d notice a dark hallway which doesn’t mean much but the shading on it is just amazing to me. The ability to cast a shadow from the wall of the lighted area onto the wall that leads away from the picture is an amazing detail to capture. Elizabeth’s shading technique/ skill is outstanding.…

The artwork by Claire Oakley is a mixed media painting of tree textures. Unique ways are applied to creating this work with tissue paper, watercolour, poster paint, and acrylic. The artist represents the natural texture and ochre colour of tree bark to the artwork, however, tints of vivid colour are also used to create a livelier atmosphere. The essence of this artwork is its texture and naturalness resembling real trees.…

Georgia O’Keeffe’s Music-Pink and Blue II, 1919 is an oil on canvas piece now being held at the Whitney Museum of Art in New York. The form of this piece work of art, in my opinion, is abstract. The media of this piece is oil but to me, it also closely resembles watercolor paint. The emphasis/focal point of this piece is the dark blue oval-like shape at the bottom right, the implied line, in my opinion, is in this shape, the shape looks like it is sort of floating or swimming to the top. The colors surrounding the shape create an arc of some sort, the colors of the arc are reds, pinks, and oranges. The colors in this piece are very bright, almost none are dull. There is also use of almost every color on the color wheel on this piece. Primary,…

While visiting the Jaycee Park Centre for the Arts, this picture of cowboys rounding up cows on a ranch instantly caught my eye. The picture is a standard size of 3x3, and is square shaped. It is enclosed within a golden frame, which makes it more conspicuous. I was drawn to the picture by the cowboy who is wearing the red scarf, and sky blue shirt. The artist James Spurlock, has used him to capture the observer’s attention by using bold colors on his clothes as opposed to the other two cowboys, and the cows. The artist has also created an impression of distance as the cows in the front appear to be large in size. and clearer as compared to the two cowboys in the background. The element of a middle ground is present which is portrayed by the cowboy with the red scarf. He appears to be positioned between the cows in the front, and the other two cowboys in the back. The artist has been able to imply the texture of the cows’ skin using different brush strokes. One can see the roughness of the cows’ skin even without having to touch the smooth oil painted canvas. One cannot immediately tell the time of day when the picture was taken. This is because the background is not blue, but rather it is a greyish color, and most probably the cowboys are trying to lead the cows back to their stables for shelter before it rain. In the process of rounding up the cows, the surrounding is filled with dust resulting in the dark gold background.…

In The Oxbow the implied lines and shapes seemingly going in all different directions give the work the illusion of mass, likewise the light and dark areas fade into each other unifying the work and creating a unique landscape. The varying changes from dark to light shifts the focal point from the ravaged tress and dark clouds to the bright blossoming of a new day bringing everything together and gives the feel of being above ground observing the metamorphous from a birds’ eye view. This is effectively achieved by the use of an Analogous color scheme of green, yellow-green and bits of brown throughout the landscape.…

It is light and airy and it uses a lot of pastel colors and hues. The houses are all pastel pinks, oranges, and yellows and it has a slight contrast to the pastel blue of the sky which is where one would the see the boy. Only the boy and the telephone pole don’t follow the same pattern but rather wear grey, seemingly enough to tie the different colors. It seems to capture youthful feelings when one looks at this photo and it seems really nostalgic. One can also see some implied lines as the houses are angled from right to left to go up and shift your focus towards the character back on the telephone pole with him staring back at you.…

Howard works in very thick layers. She separates colours and leaves crisp definition between each stroke. Here it seems as though she has used a tool such as a knife or card, and has dragged the paint across the page. She has also picked out undertones such as purples, greens and oranges and has intensified these colours and made them really stand out. She manages to do this without overpowering the reflections and water like look.…

Thomas Cole’s piece titled The Voyage of Life: Youth is part of a four-part series that traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the "River of Life." This piece was made in 1842 and is currently located in The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The piece is oil on canvas, and it is hanging on the wall with the remaining four stages of human life; childhood, manhood, and old age. Thomas Cole’s oil painting process started with a thin and even application of an additional ground to the already prepared supports in order to harmonize his distinctive color palette. Sometimes he applied the paint quite thinly, but he varied the density of his pigments—they are especially thick in the bright highlights.…

Olley used the traditional way of still life painting that uses the painting which is made of oil and the subject matter which use the fruits, vase flowers and glassware. The composition had been done with the realistic color, has the three dimensions tones, realistic, life-like and representational object and her depth is used in creating the painting for the 3 dimensionality. The tonality of her painting also has the average uniform and sunlight as well as the metallic colors. These factors only signify that the work of art of Olley is keeping its traditional still life painting (Griffit, 2006).…

Oceans of Wisdom is a landscape narrative in a way because it is showing the importance of fishing, the ocean and whaling for the culture. It is a multicolored woodblock print done with very bright cool toned colors. The gradual change in the colors in some areas were done with a dotted effect especially seen around the whale with the blue and the white. The texture of the painting seems very rough and a lot of fine lines are used to define space. Not a lot of shading with gradual change in color is used to give dimension, giving the piece a very flat look.…

African society by incorporating the African imagery of a “still-life.” He describes a dining room in a home, but not any ordinary dining room; he incorporates the African details into the painting to distinguish it from other European/ American looks. He wanted to describe an ordinary daily routine of African-Americans. Although many people criticized his paintings including this one, as satirical stereotypes, I believe he wanted to achieve African culture and tradition into a more modern, stylistic expression.…

The painting is realistic, however it is not fully refined (arguably the intentional effect) as you can clearly make out a number of different brush strokes within the painting, which betray the painter's technique. The dark background of the painting is a also common characteristic of still life paintings as it allows the featured objects in the foreground to become more prominent. For example, the spanish bodegon paintings would implement a similar technique, framing their still life objects on selves or windowsills with very dark, negative backgrounds. The way in which the wall behind the pan of eggs and the pitcher sinks back due to its darker shade is obviously intentional to bring greater focus to the painting.…
