Doug Dubois: A Formal Analysis
The Houston Center for Photography has a photo titled Jordan up the pole Rusell Heights by Doug Dubois. The photo was taken in 2010 and printed in 2015. The title of the photograph is depicted exactly as such in the picture. An adolescent male, is shown with his legs crossed on the very peak of a telephone, with only one hand hold on to the steel pole. It is unsettling at first glance to see a young male so far away from the ground, as one may think he is about to fall at any time.
The young child’s expression is something that is interesting to analyze because one does not quite know what he is expressing. It seems to be a mixture of confusion and nonchalance which contrasts to what the audience must feel when they look at the photo. The picture evokes wonder, awe, and curiosity, emotions that starkly contrast the boy’s aura of

It is light and airy and it uses a lot of pastel colors and hues. The houses are all pastel pinks, oranges, and yellows and it has a slight contrast to the pastel blue of the sky which is where one would the see the boy. Only the boy and the telephone pole don’t follow the same pattern but rather wear grey, seemingly enough to tie the different colors. It seems to capture youthful feelings when one looks at this photo and it seems really nostalgic. One can also see some implied lines as the houses are angled from right to left to go up and shift your focus towards the character back on the telephone pole with him staring back at you.
According to Dubois, this was from a set of works called My Last Day at Seventeen. The assumption is that the story is about some of his last moments at seventeen as he reexamines his youth and tries to capture it. I think it has fully come together and he captured it well by the clothes the boy is wearing and the pastel colors that houses have. It is basically a screenshot of someone’s last day as a youth before he reaches the threshold of

Also, if you look very closely at the painting, you can see some brush strokes that the painter made. I like that because the viewer can see how thick the paint is and how you move onto the canvas. Lastly, I like how there is light around the top of the painting. I love how the artist used different colors and shades. This art piece goes very well in my family's dining room, in my opinion.…

Every single event or incident a person commits is driven by some kind of motivation whether good or bad. Regardless of the intention there are two types of motivation: Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation, intrinsic is being motivated by self-satisfaction and extrinsic is motivated by en external reward. In the memoir The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, there are a series of events or incidents in the second half of the book that display that variety of motivation that exists. Having read the book one may argue that the author Wes Moore was motivated by more intrinsic drive whereas the other Wes was motivated more by extrinsic drive.…

Since I wanted to keep the theme of children I red a poem that was untitled. Object 17 poems talks about a sleeping child. The words used are from the mother's perspective to describe her sleeping child. The colors used are again primary colors (red, blue, and yellow). The main color used is blue, this is because they are trying to create a dark environment to explain why the child is asleep. The main figures in this picture are a woman and child. The woman is hunched over the childs crib looking at the child sleep. The child is seen dressed in all white, showing the innocence that children have when they are…

In this image, Lange portrays pathos by displaying many forms of emotion all in one frame. Desperation is swept across the young mother’s face. She sits there, pondering what is going to happen next, worrying about where she is going to go next. Also, her face shows a sense of humility, and she knows she is trying her best. Moving down to her hand, her ring shows a glimpse of hope in what the future is going to hold. She could have sold her ring, and gotten a few good meals and she maybe could be living in something better than a tent, but she chose not to. The ring shows the strength in family, and how family stays together even in hard times, and it is a symbol of what was and hope for what will be. It is a beacon through the storm.…

Finally, photographs make it really easy to see the emotions. Photographer Will Counts said, “When I saw Hazel Bryan’s contorted face in the camera’s viewfinder, I knew that I had released the shutter at the right moment…” (6). Will Counts is saying that it is really easy to see the contorted, emotional look in Hazel Bryan’s face and her expression creates a powerful mood.…

We aimed to portray the youth acting out towards authority. In this case the authority figure is Ms Labowitch, our teacher. We placed her in the centre of the frame as we wanted her to be the prime focus. She wears a smile upon her face and holds out her hand, as if to ‘conciliate' with us, but she looks to the camera and not to me (the person's hand she intends to shake). This symbolises the way in which some authority figures "reach out" to the youth with nothing but a good publicity stunt and personal gain in mind. In the picture I am seen to pull my hand away, as if so say, "No, I will not buy into your false promises, or act as a tool to enhance your credibility and humanity in the eyes of…

In this painting, I can clearly see a little boy sitting down. The boy is staring right at the painter, Robert Henri. It can further be said that Du Bois created what can be considered a "philosophy of the soul" based on the social injustices and degradations of the African American people that he witnessed and was subjected to himself. Hence, Du Bois generated his own social philosophy to argue that oppression of the African race was unethical and that his race should value fighting to end oppression. He further generated his own political philosophy to argue that his race deserved the same economic, social, and political freedoms as white Americans and that laws should be abolished that currently destroyed these freedoms, such as segregation laws, and that laws should be established to preserve these freedoms. Moreover, Du Bois's call for immediate action also justified the use of self-defense, which is where his philosophies also differ from the later Martin Luther King…

The nostalgia of the photographs hung on his worn walls, were constant memories of his cheerful past, when Benjamin actually cared. ‘But now, now, he left in an instant.’ The wizened man’s words served to console the dreadful experiences of the past minutes. Here in this room, holding a photo frame tightly, he should have felt honoured and proud, yet his eyes simply could not smile. He shifted uncomfortably and evasively, looked away, lost in contemplation, thinking of the jubilant birthdays of his son, however he was continually…
