Genetically Modified Foods
The term GM (genetically modified) food has gained controversy in the last few years, but in the first place we have to understand what GM food is and how it works, the term GM foods or GMOs (genetically-modified organisms) is used when we refer to crop plants using different molecular biology techniques or methods to change their properties, such as to enhance their resistance to herbicides, improve nutritional content, and other properties. This seems great, but why there are people who disapprove the development and consumption of GM foods?
Modifying plant genetics can have many benefits, because of the use of precise and accurate molecular techniques, the main difference between traditional breeding techniques which are not so accurate and need more time to develop, are the molecular methods that are used to modify plants. Genetic engineering can change plants genes in a short time, for example taking out a plant gene that gives low temperature resistance to the plant and insert it into another plant. The uses and varieties we can achieve are immense and can end with great results.
“The world population has topped 7.5 billion people and is predicted to double in the next 50 years. Ensuring an adequate food supply for this booming population is going to be a major challenge in the years to come. GM foods promise to meet this need in a number of ways” (B.Whitman, 2000). The most common uses of genetic engineering in plants are herbicide tolerance, disease resistance, cold tolerance, drought & salinity resistance, nutrition, pharmaceuticals, etc. It could help even to stop malnutrition and in some years to reduce world food shortage, because the possibilities are wide.

    Some of the reasons include subjecting their consumers to crops that have not been fully tested. The Institute for Responsible Technology has published a study on the effects of GMO fed rats. “1.8 Farmers report pigs and cows became sterile from GM corn 1. More than 20 farmers in North America report that pigs fed GM corn varieties had low conception rates, false pregnancies or gave birth to bags of water. 2. Both male and female pigs became sterile. 3. Some farmers also report sterility among cows.”(Web) Although human trials have yet to exist, the possibility of sterility is a scary consequence for a food. Another reported health problem was internal organ damage, “4.1 GM proteins may be misfolded or have added molecules 1. Proteins expressed in a GM plant may be processed differently than in the donor organism. 2. Those changes, which could include misfolding or molecular attachments, can be harmful in many unpredicted ways. 3. Current studies do not adequately test for these changes”(Web). In chemistry, there are hundreds of thousands of compounds such as proteins and amino acids, and every single compound has a very specific blueprint of molecules laid out to plug into the human body in specific ways. When this exact blueprint is not followed, it can lead to failure of proper digestion and absorption of these nutrients. A GMO can have a replica blueprint but if the nutrient is off by a single bond, it can mimic its original molecules structure but have the inability to properly plug into the digestive systems. Although there are immeasurable possibilities for mutation in these organic-based compounds, there are also a large amount of advantages to GMOs.     Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods.
