Gender Inequality in the Workplace
It is not up for debate whether women are discriminated against in the workplace it is evident in census data; in 1998 women made 73 cents to the dollar paid to men. Even today, there is still a pay gap that exists between women and men. It is said that the organizations that are pro-equal pay, including some unions, support the idea that the government should set wages for all jobs. To the contrary, the organizations that are proponents of equal pay are not for job wages being set by the government-they wish to have the discrimination taken out of pay scales from within the company. Commonly, this pay gap is attributed to the fact that women in the United States are still expected to attend to familial obligations over work. Data shows that women do attend to family obligations, like having a child, caring for a sick family member, or caring for an elder; but they also do not give up on work. Yes, women often chose lower paying jobs in exchange for flexible hours and do spend a lower number of hours per week long-term at their jobs than their male counterparts. Because women are socialized to be the primary care givers they are kept at these lower paying jobs that are more flexible, the jobs allow them to care for their family yet still retain an income (possibly a second income for the household). Women’s changing roles in society has resulted in this workplace problem. Women are allowed and often encouraged to work but they are not rewarded or compensated at the same level, for their efforts, that men in the work force are. The pay gap would be narrowed if companies were more conducive to family schedules. Men and women would receive equal pay for the same job. Companies would benefit by retaining quality employees. Men and women need to start out making the same amount of money for the same job, companies need to offer women ample maternity leave, families need to be offered

For many centuries, women have had to fight for their rights. In today’s society, women are still discriminated against in the workplace. Generations of women have sacrificed for woman today to have the opportunity to be able to have a voice on what they want to do in life. In the workforce, women make up 47% of the United States workforce (“Women's Bureau (WB) - Quick Facts on Women in the Labor Force in 2010"). This is almost half but yet they are paid less than men. For decades now, there has been an ongoing pay gap amongst men and women. Some people say it is the woman’s choice and they made it that way, others say it is plain out sexism. To this day, there is still no definitive reason why, but the gap seems to close little by little each year. Can we contribute that to women standing up for themselves more, working harder to prove their worth, or even challenging the system? T.J. Billitteri wrote the article entitled Gender pay gap touching base on the important fact which is women working and sharing the same career title as a man are making far less money (March 14, 2008).CQ Researcher, 18, 241-264.Billitteri begins his article touching base on a large lawsuit of Ledbetter vs. Goodyear tire. Ledbetter, one of few females in her supervisory position, realized she was making $559.00 a month less than the males in the same position. She received around $3 million in back pay and damages. That case stirred up a lit of press on the pay gap issue and put emphasis on bills such as the Fair Pay Act. Recognized female state officials are pushing the enforcement of Fair Pay Acts and Equal Pay Acts more and more on Congress and the Senate still to this day. Billitteri (2008) states with those in effect men and women would have equal compensation when working in the same field. A prime example is a women working as a Chief Executive makes on average 22 percent of what a male Chief Executive makes. Looking at the 2006 U.S. Census statistics it showed “the pay gap at about 77 percent of the men’s median full-time, year-round earnings.” (Billitteri 2008). In Billitteris’ article he discusses how when hiring a female the company takes into account the possibilities for maternity leave, higher insurance needs, time off to care for children, and a raised risk for sexual harassment claims. It has become apparent that women are intimidated to seek out executive or other high paying positions…

To begin my research, I used the Brevard Community College Library database to find information by typing in keywords like “gender equality”, “equality in the workplace”, and “gender role attitudes”. I found the articles suggested in the class assignment page in JSTOR, which was the database I found to be the most helpful. I then proceeded to use articles that were in the reference section of the suggested titles from the class assignment page. This way I found it easier to draw conclusions and make connections to my sources. I found my textbook to be especially helpful in describing the different theories and perceptions of society; the Pew Research Center website was exceptionally insightful as well.…

tThere was nothing ‘natural’ about monoculture. It was a consequence of imperialist requirements and machinations, extending into areas that were politically independent in name. Monoculture was a characteristic of regions falling under imperialist domination. Certain countries in Latin America such as Costa Rica and Guatemala were forced by United States capitalist firms to concentrate so heavily on growing bananas that they were contemptuously known as ‘banana republics’. In Africa, this concentration on one or two cash-crops for sale abroad had many harmful effects. Sometimes, cash-crops were grown to the exclusion of staple foods — thus causing famines. For instance, in Gambia rice farming was popular before the colonial era, but so much of the best land was transferred to groundnuts that rice had to be imported on a large scale to try and counter the fact that famine was becoming endemic. In Asante, concentration on cocoa raised fears of famine in a region previously famous for yams and other foodstuff.…

Whoever said men and women are equal must be blind. Women have always taken a back seat to men in American society. This occurrence is not only found in the United States, but in other countries as well. It's safe to say that the Declaration of Independence started it, and it has continued to the present. There is one set of standards that apply to men, and another set of standards that apply to women. This is evident in the home, workplace, and society in general.…

Well, I am putting my "two cents" in on the race in America. With all the fuss about race in the public square, I began to put my thoughts together on the subject observing everything. First, I looked at my circle of friends. Could I make a racial distinction on loyalty based on race, no I can not. How about intelligence, no I can not. How about the opportunity, yes I can. We should be able to create an opportunity for ourselves. Rightfully we focus on public policy. Without question, there is unfairness in government policies and practice, and we must protest to change that. But protest cannot be our sole mechanism for redressing social ills. Education is the key. How do we eliminate the slave mentality that permeates throughout our communities? Black Americans have a GNP greater than many solvent countries, and…

Gender inequality has been an issue since the longest time. Women seem to be more affected than men, by this problem. I would like to focus on gender inequality and how females affected by it. Throughout history women have been discriminated, in many ways. They were not allowed to vote. They had very little independence. They were even considered inferior, human beings, with less strength and inferior brains. People tend to confuse sex and gender. Based on the dictionary the word sex means the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiate with reference to the organs and reproductive functions. Whereas gender means the characteristics that a society or culture delineates as masculine or feminine. Gender role, is the characteristics and behaviors that cultures attribute to each of the two sexes. In certain cultures men are allowed to drive cars while woman are not. In most situations a woman crying is seen as something normal but it is rare to see a man crying. In most parts of the world women do more housework and men do the handy jobs. However there is a great gap between the two genders. Gender inequality is a serious but suppressed issue around the world that is mostly fought by women. A few great differences between genders are in profession, behaviors, even in the eyes of parents.…

In the United States, more than half of the employees in most companies are women. In 40% of families, a woman is the primary source of income. Women, on average, receive more college degrees than men (37% of women have Bachelors degrees compared to 34% of men). Despite all of this, women still somehow earn significantly less than men yearly. In 2013, for every dollar a man made, a woman only earned 77 cents. The wage gap between men and women has barely changed since the 1990s. "According to research, if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take almost fifty years—or until 2058—for women to finally reach pay parity" ("Pay Equity and Discrimination"). Therefore, the setback is not that females are not educated; the problem enters when parents try to balance work and family, and women usually end up carrying nearly all of the caregiving responsibilities (Brinton, "Gender Inequality and Women in the Workplace").…
