Personal Responsibility
Personal responsibility means holding yourself accountable for our actions, owning up to our own behavior and dealing with the consequences, whatever they may be. In life, we cannot rely on other people to do things for us. It is so easy to blame the people around us when things go wrong, but ultimately it is up to me to determine whether or not I will succeed in life. Everyone has goals in life, but the only way to achieve them is to be realistic and set goals for themselves. Responsibility is more than just thinking or wanting to do something; it is about the actions that go along with those intentions. I love this quote from

Whether we are starting college fresh out of high school, or coming back later in life makes no difference to the instructor or our classmates. We are held to the same level of responsibility as everyone else in the class, and are expected to turn our assignments in on time, etc. This is vital especially when it comes to working in learning teams, as we not only let ourselves down when we do not complete something on time; we let our entire team down as well. There is a domino effect that happens when we start becoming lazy with our schoolwork. Once a person gets behind, it is much harder to become motivated to catch up! In our textbook Becoming a Master Student, the author states how time is not a renewable resource. It is one thing (unlike most other things in life) that we cannot get back, and once a minute is gone, it is gone forever, so we need to use our time wisely (Ellis, 2011). It is so important to keep our goals in mind, especially when things seem hard or monotonous, so as not to waste the precious little time we have. Ellis (2011) also states “You do have enough time for the things you want to do. All it takes is thinking about the possibilities and making conscious choices” (p. …show more content…
My plan is simple, but requires consistency in order for it to work. I will check the syllabus for whatever class I am currently in at the beginning of each week, and based on what is due that week, I will go through my schedule and plan my days out accordingly. I have found it easiest to do as much work as possible in the beginning of the week, so as not to feel pressured and rushed to finish once I get close to the due date, so I will continue to do that. Really, I suppose consistency IS my plan. So much of it has to do with time management, and I will have to ensure that I am giving myself enough time each day to check in and respond to discussion questions and my classmates, plus turn my assignments in early or on time. Nobody else is to blame if I drop the ball on turning in an assignment, or mismanage my time. I need to make sure to prioritize my class work above many of the other trivial things that tend take up time in my day. Technology and the Internet are amazing resources and necessary tools to have when in school but also can be a major

Personal responsibility is an essential element in every aspect of one’s life. What exactly does personal responsibility mean; the answer is most likely different for everyone. Chuck Gallozzi may have summed it up best when he stated, “Responsibility is not a burden, it is a blessing” (Gallozzi, 2009, title page). Those nine simple words speak volumes in that taking responsibility or holding oneself accountable, answerable, for their actions or inactions, accepting the consequences that result from those actions or inactions and most important, understanding the effect one has on family, friends, loved ones, coworkers, and classmates. Gallozzi went on to say, “No, we are not responsible for all that happens to us, but we are responsible for how we think, feel and act when they happen” (Gallozzi, 2009, Para 1).…

One of the most important first steps is to learn about time management. Learning the strategies of a good time management system and applying them ultimately will benefit the student tremendously. Stanford (n.d.) states that time management skills will help students manage their goals effectively which will assist them in completing homework assignments on schedule and prepare for examinations. Students will have to monitor their time and adjust it accordingly for studies and assignments. While monitoring my time, I found it helpful in selecting the best times to study and complete my homework assignments. It is suggested that students spend at least two hours studying for every hour of class time. I personally plan on following this rule to give me adequate time to complete my assignments. Every student is different, but he can find a time management system that works best to balance school, work, and family. The planning system utilizing a list with prioritizing tasks as “A”, “B”, or “C” along with an “Outlook” calendar seems to work best. Students also need to learn how to set goals and to incorporate their short- term, mid-term and long-term goals into their academic lives. This will allow them to recognize how necessary their short-term goals are and how they affect their long-term goals. One cannot achieve long-term goals without first succeeding in their short-term goals. They go hand in hand. For example, a long-term goal is to get a BA degree, but I cannot accomplish this without first having success in my short-term goal of attending all classes and completing all work assignments on time. For success in another long-term goal of good health, I would need to be committed to eating healthy foods and not over eat because of stress. Exercising regularly and getting enough sleep regardless of other commitments will ensure students a refreshed and…

Thesis Statement: Personal responsibility is defined as taking responsibility for your actions and accepting the consequences of those actions because taking responsibility for your actions means you do not try to blame others for you not being able to finish school or your goals. Also, accepting the consequences of our actions teaches us to be more mindful of our choices and we can react to our mistakes. Even though blaming others for our failures is easy because we are more likely to feel better about the situation if someone else has to face the consequences.…

One has to approach school as an added duty in one’s life. I must add an extra responsibility to my daily chores and activities. I am venturing into an activity I have not done any schooling for over 30 plus years now. School is something I must learn all over again. This changes our everyday routines to a point that we all must learn to work well with this new education. I am glad that in the past I had learned great tools to work with while working on these new responsibilities. Making it great while I was getting my A.S. degree in Florida Tech College out of Orlando, FL. Back then everything was paper and pencil or pen. Now I see an all new era of schooling and especially online. I force myself to get things done early, just like I do when I need to be somewhere for an appointment. I arrive much earlier than requested so I have time to sit and plan what will be going on at this appointment. I turn that into the same here with my online class. I don't like to be late for anything even dinner at home. Work on my college activities and required assignments take on the same aspect that I apply to my personal life. Both must be taken on with kid gloves. But as long as I keep in mind the goals created for school and stick to them I should have no trouble working out any obstacles that come my…

College is difficult, it demands a lot of your time, and attention. Have you ever said the words,” I will do it later”? We are all procrastinators in some way or another; the difference is some people stick to their deadlines (with the proneness to misjudge the amount of time it takes to finish). According to Center for Student Excellence (CSE) advisors many college students find themselves waiting until the last minute to study or complete assignments, and students often find themselves procrastinating due to their newfound independence, a multitude of distractions and a lack of motivation (Patrick, 2014). One explanation for procrastination is that it is a choice. We have a choice to complete a task now instead of later. Another explanation is that it is a way to deal with anxiety, boredom, guilt, frustration and anger. When we procrastinate it can adversely affect our health. In a study done in 2007, researchers found that while at the beginning of the semester students who procrastinated showed less signs of illness and lower levels of stress than non-procrastinators, by the end of the semester, the procrastinators were found to have higher levels of stress and illness…

One major challenge that I believe I will encounter in college is managing my own time wisely. In high school, my time was always guided by others. My teachers constantly reminded me when assignments were due and instructed me exactly how to do them. However, in college, I will need to constantly refer to my syllabus to check when assignments are due. I am now going to be on my own. It will be my responsibility to do my assignments on time. To overcome this challenge, I will have my syllabus with me at all times to check what assignments need to be done. This will help me stay on top of everything.…
