General Observations: The birth scene has a gloomy tone and color scheme, suggesting that this method of living is something humans should avoid. Since this film is a futuristic film about the use of the findings from the Human Genome Project, this film is warning us about the possible misuse of the new genetic information. Geneticists are an important job in the film because after one second, the blood is being tested and geneticists can determine your life and future. This determines how long your life will be and what diseases you may face, but not how happy or what you will face in life. It is different from a fortune teller. A fortune teller tells the outside danger that you may face, however, this warns you about …show more content…
The geneticists mentioned that he is trying to give the parents the”best possible start” and that the child will be the “best of you.” I think people are misunderstanding that the child is the best of you, but not the best human being, because we are not perfect. Imperfection is what makes human unique. This shows that the genetic traits are the potential guides or the “start” of life, but people can still change due to their living environment. Sometimes I think gaining too much control of things makes it too complicated and it is better to leave it to nature and chance, just like how the parents in the film wanted some traits to be …show more content…
This tells the public about what can happen if we take these research future and use it on the human race and life. Most people may only be exposed to the genetic research being used to cure diseases and not in the realm of designing humans or telling the future. This gives the public more knowledge about what genetics can do. One of the main implications of genetic research and its controversy is about using it to tell the future of individuals by looking at the genetic traits and see what their potentials are. Another area is using the genetic information to design babies. This clip shows one possibility of what the outcome of this genetic research can be. It shows the viewers, what our society will be like if we bring genetic research further, rather than just curing diseases because the Human Genome Project brings so many possibilities that the public may not be aware

    1. When it comes to the depiction of genetic engineering in Gattaca, there are multiple outcomes of the scientific procedure that are positive. The first positive outcome of genetic engineering in the movie was that it allows the parents of children to choose how they want their children to be. When having a child, in the first few months, parents do not know the gender or any of the traits, unless they are genetically tested to determine the phenotype of their offspring. With the genetic engineering the movie, Anton’s parents were allowed to pick out exactly what they wanted their son to look like and also what they wanted his genetics to be. Secondly, the genetic engineering would diminish the chances of offspring being born with any diseases, conditions or disorders. Since scientists could take the genetic fault and fix it before the mother was even impregnated, there wouldn’t be any more children with conditions and disorders that affect them their whole lifetime. In the movie, Vincent was born with a condition that affected his heart and caused him to have a very short life expectancy. On the contrary his brother, Anton, since he was genetically engineered, didn’t have any disorders and was almost in perfect genetic and physical condition. Due to the fact that Vincent had a heart condition and his brother did not, his brother was accepted into Gattaca and Vincent was not (as himself). The last pro of genetic engineering shown in the movie was the fact that if a baby was genetically engineered, they could potentially do anything because their genetics would be perfect. The task of finding the correct person for a job would not be an issue anymore because specific people could be genetically engineered to be good for a certain activity or job. Sandel believes it is against our human nature to tamper with genetics because it strips us of our humility. For example, parents are supposed to nurture and love their kids but genetically modifying them takes away that relationship. Children are a precious gift and should be accepted for who they are, not for what society dictates is “perfect”. Strengthening his argument, Sandel brings our attention to two types of love: accepting and transformative. A parent who displays accepting love is “open to the unbidden” of their child and loves them for who they are (Sandel 11). They focus more on the being of their child rather than their well-being. Alternatively, transformative love seeks to change the child assuming something is wrong with them in the first place. As one can see, this type of love is similar to germline engineering, in that its focus is on well-being.
