One of the pros of genetically modified organisms is how cheap the outcome is. Take the GMO based company, Monsanto, for example. The sole purpose of this big name company is to produce an unbelievable amount of seeds, genetically modified of course, and ship them to places with food insecurity. These places include third world countries like much of Africa which suffer from chronic hunger. Monsanto is the answer to these third world companies – their mission is to put a stop to world hunger with the production of these GMO seeds. This all comes back around to the advancement of science. Without science, there would be no possible way to produce so many seeds – with GMOs, scientists are able to cut the time it would take to produce these seeds…

Many people look at GMOs with a sort of view as if to ask: Why should I eat new GMO crops, when I could eat a crop that has been around for millennia? What they don’t understand, is that there is really no such thing as a crop that scientists just altered. People have been modifying plants since the creation of agriculture twelve thousand years ago. While it may have been done differently back then, the current method of genetically modifying plants is just a more deliberate way of doing what humankind has always done. The only difference now is that people have a scientific understanding of what they are doing and have improved agricultural techniques; advancements in agriculture have moved from the farm to the lab. The reason that I think so many people are opposed to GMOs, is because they don’t understand what they are, and because they think that scientists are doing something radical in making GMOs; they fear the unknown.”(Chrisopher…

Genetically modified (GM) foods have been around for thousands of years. “We are what we eat.” Everyone has heard this famous quote or a variation of it, but what do we actually eat? Over the past years a new type of food called Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) has flooded the food market. This new type of food is designed to better resist the climate and to contain more vitamins and minerals for the consumer, yet the debate is still ongoing: are GMOs harmful or helpful? The following text will present both sides of the argument: the GMOs activists and the anti-GMOs activists’ views. Then I will explain why I support the GMOs activists.…

I was born and raised in a small rural town in western Kansas. I have learned hardworking values growing up on a farm. My family relies on farming and ranching as a way of life. So, when I hear people talking about how GMO’s are bad for people’s health and our environment, it makes me feel concerned about the information people are receiving. GMO’s don’t affect the health of people or the environment at all. Instead they help to improve crop yields by modifying the seeds according to where a person lives by being drought resistant or bug resistant for example. This helps farmers and ranchers such as my family to make more profit from a higher yield. This results in more food produced which can help in a world with an ever-growing population.…

What exactly are GMOs? Genetically modified foods are organisms manipulated in a laboratory setting, so their genetic make-up can be modified. Many supporters choose GMOs to prevent the use of herbicides, pesticides, greenhouse emissions, and for the reduced costs of food. They argue that a variety of potatoes, cotton, and maize, carry many genes from Bacillus thuringiensis which successfully control insect population worldwide during its use, especially in the U.S where they are currently being sold commercially. Also, they stand by their point of the use of these products will greatly decrease pesticide use. Progress has been in the GMO industry with oilseed grape,…

Many people are against Genetically modified foods because of the unknown long term effects and environmental effects. There were concerns about how GMO’s can affect other animals. “ GMOs may be toxic to non-target organisms, bees and butterflies being the most talked-about examples currently. Bees are hugely important in the pollination of many food crops.” (Emily Glass) If this true, this can be the biggest reason why GMO’s should be banned. Another reason how it could affect the environment is by making it a monoculture in our ecosystem. “When GM crops are planted, generally in a monocrop fashion, many heritage seeds are no longer used. The nature of GMOs means fewer weed flowers and, therefore, less nectar for pollinators. “ (Emily Glass.) Having a monoculture can result in quicker spread of diseases and can cause an economic disaster. They’re many possible consequences of genetically modifying foods but most of the possible consequences are predictions or theories.…

    The Effects of Gmos

The two articles I have chosen are both peer-reviewed and have two different opinions about GMO’s. The first article, titled “GMO’s and Global Justice” by Kristian Toft, is against the use of GMO’s, explaining how they are bad for us as human beings and for our environment. Her biggest concern is that we do not know the extent of what these genetically modified foods are doing to our bodies because of the lack of long-term affect testing. When trans-fats were first introduced, corporations battled to get them onto our grocery shelves. It is only decades later that this once novel food has been proven to be extremely unhealthful. This could be a glance into the future of GMO’s. It is similarly a concern that GMO’s in food are causing an increase in allergic reactions. The process of genetically modifying a plant or animal adds new proteins that weren’t indigenous to the original plant or animal, causing an allergic reaction increase when ingested in the human body. Also, some GMO foods have had antibiotic features added to them so they are resistant to certain diseases and viruses. When humans eat them, these antibiotics features persist in our bodies and make actual antibiotic medications less effective. Toft goes on to say that GMO’s are banned in more than 60 countries around the world including, the European Union,…

Def/Explanation: Firstly, GMO is an acronym for Genetically Modified Organisms. What this concept is can be briefly explained by the following analogy. Suppose I take Iman* and Ibrahim* to take part in a science experiment. I take some of Iman’s genes, duplicate it and put it in Ibrahim’s body. Then I present Ibrahim in front of you all and tell you that this new Ibrahim is far stronger, efficient and beneficial to all of you and the society. You guys don’t know anything that has happened with Ibrahim internally and are just brainwashed that he is better for us. Similarly, GMOs are created but instead of humans they’re experimented on crops and animals. Therefore, because it is inhumane, defies the laws of nature and have consequences that are unknown to us, I strongly believe that GMOs should be completely banned from our society, once and for all!…
