Fun with Dick and Jane
“Fun with Dick and Jane” (2005)
Starring: Jim Carrey, Tea Leoni, and Alec Baldwin

In need of some light hearted entertainment and a good laugh, I chose the movie “Fun with Dick and Jane” for this assignment. “Fun with Dick and Jane” asks the common question, “What is the difference between a corporate crook and a bank robber?” The movie opens with Dick leaving his home in the picture perfect neighborhood in the year 2000. Dick is married to Jane and they have a son who is more or less being raised by the housekeeper, Blanca. The family is living in a culture of high powered, high paying jobs, high tech appliances and high stress living. Dick and Jane have it all and they can’t get enough of it.
The first ethical issue that is identified in the movie is Globodyne’s fraudulent and dishonest financial dealings. One day, Dick is called up to the prominent 51st floor of Globodyne where he gets the promotion he has been dreaming of; he is now the Vice President of Communications. At this point in the movie Dick is made the face of Globodyne. Almost immediately Jack and Frank, the CEO and CFO, tell Dick he will be speaking on a television show called “Money Life with Sam Samuels” to discuss the company. They tell him he will just be discussing the quarterly projections and ask him to “put a positive spin” on the company. Dick is ambushed by the host, Sam, who informs him that the CEO of Globodyne has recently unloaded a considerable share of his own company stocks. Dick’s responses or lack thereof, made it obvious that he was not aware of anything going on in the company. He is also confronted by a presidential hopeful on the television show who says that companies like Globodyne “pervert the American dream." When he arrives back at the office everything is in utter chaos. All the employees, including the CFO Frank Bascombe, are running around the office shredding and burning documents trying to cover up the apparent corporate scandal that Dick

Knocked Up presents the audience with real life issues that society does not speak about in most cases, and this is not a bad thing. It raises awareness, and allows the viewer to examine and question the themes brought up in the film. Although screwball romantic comedies are continuously watched by older generations, they are a thing of the past, and Knocked Up, and other similar films, are now taking center stage in the genre of romantic comedy--whether older generations accept them or…

Intended for the enjoyment of the present-day youth generation, the 2007 comedy film Knocked Up deals with more than just comedic issues. Technically introduced as a romantic comedy, this film serves more to its comedic orientation. With awkward romance and stoner mannerisms, the laughs are plentiful for the intentional audience of Knocked Up. However, as the audience is served its fill of laughter, issues are presented that rarely grace the silver screen. The director of this film, Judd Apatow, utilizes his dominion and influence over the audience to introduce the dominant ideology of Knocked Up. As seen in his previous film, The 40 Year Old Virgin, it is evident that the good guy can get the girl and in doing so may come along some unexpected complications. Apatow’s use of comedy in this media context to present such complications leads the audience to conclude that they too should adapt to his alternative approach to unplanned pregnancies in this present day.…
