In Seth Holmes' and Tania Li's compelling books, entitled Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies and Land's End the extreme dynamics between the indigenous communities of the Lauje, of Sulawesi Indonesia, and of the Triqui, of southern Mexico, and the global capitalistic market are examined and scrutinized. In the case of Li's Land's End she depicts the transformation of traditional agriculturally practices, the shift of local economics and the social hierarchy that emerges from the choice of the Lauje people to participate in a capitalistic market governed by profit and competition. Li uses the case of the Lauje to contradict the notion that capitalism is an all inclusive system in which wealth propagates, eventually, to the lower class, and is to the…

“Taken for Pomegranate” by Dave Lazarus appeared in Men's Health in March 1997. This monthly magazine has published articles written for the general public on various health issues that appeal to men; usually, the articles are well-written, but this article was poorly done. For example, Lazarus' purposes were to inform, persuade, and entertain, but he was only partially successful. The attempted humor was supposed to increase the entertainment value, but it diminished his credibility; his childish comments ruined his ability to inform or persuade. Why would readers want to follow the advice of someone who thought human sacrifice was “cool” (Lazarus 50)? Even though professional writers should present information in an unbiased logical,…

Since it’s creation in 1869, football has become a crucial piece to American society. On a typical Friday night in any small town, the sounds of the crowd, the band, and the cheerleaders can be heard from the dimly lit streets: this is the place where a town comes together as a community and becomes one through the hopes and dreams of the players on the field. During his “mid-life crisis,” author and reporter H.G. Bissinger abandoned his life in Pennsylvania and moved to the small on the map town of Odessa, Texas. During his time in the town, Bissinger was able to reveal “America’s small town values” (Denver Post), both good and bad. As he became more familiar with the town, Bissinger was able to develop a story from his introduction to Boobie Miles. Immersing himself into the town of Odessa during the 1988 Permian High School football season, H.G. Bissinger follows the development of Boobie Miles to encompass the moral of the Friday Night Lights in order to reveal the inner workings of the town, the team, and the dream and how Boobie is the essential piece to the development of those themes.…

The year 1968 was a year to be remembered: a time of war and a draft, assassinations, and protests and riots about all of the above. Being a sophomore at Columbia University, James Simon Kunen exemplified lots of radical and democratic views both protesting at the university and expressing them in his first book, The Strawberry Statement: Notes of a College Revolutionary written in 1969. With all of the things that Kunen has done with his life, his first book is still perhaps his best and most moving piece.…

Patrick Swayze was born a fighter. He was born six weeks premature and his mother, Patsy, had a grueling child birth. None of the doctors or nurses knew if he was going to make it, but miraculously – baby Patrick survived. Patsy owned a dance studio in Houston, where Patrick supposedly learned to dance before he could walk. His father, who went by the name of Big Buddy, was a strong Texas cowboy, but wasn’t afraid to play the role of a mother every once in a while. Patrick didn’t strive academically; his true passions were dance and football. His high school football career was cut short when he suffered a knee injury. He was forced to rest his knee, otherwise he’d never be able to play any sport or dance again. Being a true fighter, Patrick wanted to work through the pain, which he did in his acting career later in life. He was brave as a child and very stubborn and persistent about getting his ways. He was also quite popular with the girls in his dance classes. Being one of the few straight male dancers at the time, Patrick was looked up to by the younger girls and boys and was all of the older girl’s crush. Patrick’s childhood affected his adult life tremendously; without Patsy, Patrick wouldn’t have been dancing his whole childhood. Without his parents, he wouldn’t know what the feeling of love felt like. Without his bravery he developed as a child, he wouldn’t have been his own stuntman in some of his action movies.…

High school, the best years of your life with everyday shaping and molding you from a feminine boy to becoming a respectable masculine adult, in truth its surviving everyday without being called a fag. In C.J. Pascoe’s ethnography she examines the dynamics of masculinity carefully exploring gender conformity that’s extracted from a collection of humiliations, fears and anxieties among high school boys. Within the eighteen months that Pascoe tediously studied the students of River High, she opened my mind to reminisce about my high school years at El Capitan. From the pep rallies in the gym to the weight room discussions, however, Pascoe’s research expressed a deeper meaning to the formation of gender identities in high school. Using Pascoe’s analytic methods along with D’emilio, freedman and weeks methodology and terminology I will compare my high school to River High that Pascoe analyzes in this ethnography.…

Just a few pages into the book, words had already begun to jump out at me, capturing my attention. "The kids in Newark, black and brown, speaking Spanglish, hoods over their heads, wheeling their stolen cars over to the local chop shop -- they were aliens in America. Strange, forever separate and separated from the American ideal. But these Glen Ridge kids, they were pure gold, every mother's dream, every father's pride. They were not only Glen Ridge's finest, but in their perfection they belonged to all of us. They were Our Guys (page 7)." This is a story about White Privilege, I thought. After reading the next two pages, I changed my mind. "...I wanted to understand how their status as young athlete celebrities in Glen Ridge influenced their treatment of girls and women, particularly those of their age.....I was especially curious about what license they were permitted as a clique of admired athletes and how that magnified the sense of superiority they felt as individuals (pages 8-9)." Oh! This is a story about jock culture, I thought.…
