Xyz Portraying a Person
Ms. Adom Writing Seminar April 5, 2013 Happy When Others Are Jaime Montalvo has been all over the place. He has lived all over the world, and did not grow up in the greatest of conditions since his family was not the wealthiest by any means. However, Jaime holds a high standard for himself that has taken him places and will continue to take him places in life. My name is Jaime Montalvo, and I am a tennis professional at the Chapel Hill Country Club. Those who don’t know me well probably see me as an ordinary person, but really I am an interesting man with what I consider to be an excellent story and work ethic. Throughout my childhood, my family rarely lived in one place for more than a few years. I was born in Puerto Rico, and lived in places all over the United States and even in England. I eventually went on to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. There, I really got into the sport of tennis. I was not a beginner, but it was not until college that I really embraced the sport and grew a passion for it. I feel that I am extremely passionate about everything I do and I set a very high standard for myself. I am the type of guy that is happy when those around me are happy. I define myself as a true people person or people pleaser. What motivates me to keep working hard each and every day is my drive to keep all of the members happy. The most stressful part of my job is when a member is unhappy about something. I hope that this speaks to how deeply I care about the

country club and its reputation. I always try to stay calm under pressure and very rarely do I show signs of having any temper at all. I also try to be as outgoing as possible because I feel that it is a quality one must have to be successful in what I do. In return for what I give to the members and the club, I am beloved and appreciated by most of the many members of the Chapel Hill Country Club. I do not really like to belittle my work, because it is certainly a high priority.

A writer can only become effective if he decides to value change and thus abandon the conventions of daily life and tradition itself. This can only happen too if there have been events in his or her life that triggered the decision to break free from what is traditional. Based on “The Achievement of Desire,” Richard Rodriguez has not broken the hold of tradition over him, and that he has not become his own authority because he has remained obedient to all those whom he had considered symbols of authority like his parents, his teachers and the society.…

There is truly no person that has ever deserved to be called a writer more than Red Smith. As a man who loved and believed in the art of writing, he once stated, “All you do is sit down and open a vein and bleed it out drop by drop” (Schmuhl xx). Even more, he was a hardworking and dedicated man that put his all into each piece of literature, despite the constant and restraining deadlines placed on him. His dedication was never more evident than when he stated, “I made up my mind that every time I sat down to a typewriter I would slash my veins and bleed and that I’d try to make each word dance” (Schmuhl xx). Furthermore, his work far exceeded the stigmas placed on sports writing at the time, since he cared more about the literature than the subject matter. This is all evident in his essay, “When I Was an Athlete,” in which he discusses what it was like to try to get out of gym class as a freshman in college. Red Smith’s background, experiences, and writing style propelled him to be one of the greatest sportswriters of all time.…

The writing sample provided expresses my skill in fiction. Written for my Craft of Fiction course, it is a two piece exercise that serves as a beginning and a middle. These two pieces display my ability with tension and mood shifts. Out of the other pieces I’ve written so far this year, these two have the most significance to myself as a person. “Shape Shifting Dog Man” and “What Are You?” are pieces I wished I could have read during my younger years. The lack of positive African American characters in the media is what pushed me to become a writer. These pieces directly reflects my desire to see characters like myself in the same situations as other races depicted in our popular culture. The use of tension and mood shifts strengthens this…

When working out, whether that be your physical body or your skills, it is important to push yourself, and that is exactly what I did when I wrote this paper. When the entirety of my writing education has been focused on academic writing, it makes it difficult to switch to the memoir writing that is required for this class. Since this form of writing is difficult in it’s own right, it is even more daunting to write about the experience of someone else.…

Sports have come a long way since basketball was played with milk crates and flat balls in the alleys of the poor and rich alike. One may ask, why should I be concerned with the senseless sweating and hours of practice of those who enjoy sports? The answer is one that will open your eyes to the fulfillment sports can bring whether recreational or competitive. Sport activities offer a variety of lifelong qualities and provide those who participate a sense of happiness like no other. Jennie Yabroff the author of “In Defense of Cheering”sheds light to her audience on why Cheering should be taken as seriously as any other sport. In contrast Felisa Rogers the author of “How I Learned to Love Football” tells a story of how she once despised the great American game of football to how she grew ecstatic about its very nature. Both women have admiration for their respective sports and want to encourage others to share their love of sports through their use of ethos and pathos, with pathos being more effective.…

I now feel, after being a student of this class, being successful in business or school requires the ability to organize, arrange, and compose thoughts into a logical format. Without these skills it is impossible to communicate thoughts and emotions grammatically. Reflecting on the past three months, I notice that our English 1A class has learned skills necessary to develop personal, informative, and persuasive essays. These are essential points needed to become successful in today's society. In previous English courses that I have participated in, I never realized that essay-writing skills were so important. Because of this class, my attitude toward writing has matured into an understanding of what it takes to be a good writer. Without the knowledge of why writing skills were important, I was concerned about "just getting by". Now, I enjoy the challenge of composing an interesting and thought provoking essay. I find myself developing an essay with my reader in mind, and thinking what might stimulate them to read my work. This class has developed my senses and stimulated my curiosity in the literary world and I feel I have made significant progress in my writing process. The most important of which being how, by the proper use of commas, transitions, and supportive quotes, I transform my average essay into a well composed, interesting literary work, well at least I think it’s interesting.…
