From Nothing to Something

Unique in an Insulting Way What is “baduy?” Well, it actually refers to a person who dressed weird. This is the kind of tag to those persons who has an out of this world fashion statement. It is also a kind of insult and humiliation. It can also be a factor for bullying. How will you know if you’re “baduy?” So I set up some standards for “baduy.”
“Baduy” can also be associated to those persons who came from provinces. They’re somewhat connected because those who came from provinces doesn’t know the latest trends or fashion statements of urban people. Rural people tend to wear “puruntong,” “camisa,” and “bakya.” But not all rural persons are “baduy.” Some can blend well to the fashion statement of urban people. Well, my first standard for being “baduy” is a person wearing a “bakatin” pants. It really looks “baduy” because pants are meant to cover the whole legs not just a quarter of it. Second, those persons who are wearing bright-colored or rainbow-colored dresses and long sleeves. That fashion statement is so 70s. we’re now in the year 2012 so better use the fashion statement of this year. Third, those girls who are wearing headbands with big ribbons. It really looks “baduy” because you look like a gift with a ribbon on top. That fashion statement is also so 70s. Last, those persons who wears there jewelry box for just one occasion. Let’s take Imelda Marcos as an example. She looks “baduy” right? Let’s just stick to the saying that “less is more.”
Being “baduy” is not a sin but it can make you out of place. Well, it’s not your fault that you dress like that. Maybe you were influenced by your surroundings and when you go to other places that fashion statement is not acceptable or maybe you are just stuck from the past. Sometimes being “baduy” can individualize you from other people. It makes you unique in an insulting way. So if you think you passed my standards, better be ready to search the web or magazines for

Farah doesn't care if people giver her cruel smiles or look at her coldly because it is who she is. She wears it even though all the other girls are dressed in American clothes and looks different from what her culture’s clothes look like. Farah never feels that she has to go change right away just because the other kids are dressed completely opposite. Farah is a girl who will never judge other people because she is was and still will be different too. She is so brave that she can come to school dressed fully, like she does in her culture. In the text Farah says, “I have not seen anyone else wear a dupatta.” This shows that she is fearless because she hasn’t seen anyone else wear a dupatta and she still is wearing her dupatta. Lastly, this shows she is daring because while everyone else is wearing American clothes, she is not ashamed of wearing her culture’s clothes. I think that it is important to be daring because you are then defined as unique and you will never be the same as all the other people out in the world. I think that being like Farah can affect you and the other people out there in the world in a good way. I also think that I would never get the courage to go in the class and dress…

First of all, historical events such as World War I and II had a big impact on fashion. Sometimes, people are forced to change their clothes due to these events. In European countries, women had to do men’s jobs and needed to wear practical clothes like trousers because of World War I (McDermott, 1998). The same sort of thing occurred in Japan, too. When World War II was started, women had to remake their kimonos to working jackets or monpe (see image), Japanese loose trousers with drawstrings around each ankle, because they had to do work that men used to do (Milenovich, 2007). I think these are really sad reasons to change clothes due to the fact that people were required to change fashion even if they did not want to.…

Years ago, a group of Japanese young people started hanging out at the Harajuku district. These trendsetting youth go there with their unexplainable fashion sense (Bartlett). The Harajuku fashion is just really so different because anything can be possible (Craft 26) and it is all about “creativity, theatricality, style, confidence, looking cute, and mixing and matching” (Knight). This was all made possible due to the fact that the youth still stayed at their parents’ home and their fathers provided them with the money they use up, meaning they can shop for whatever they wanted. Although it may seem that girls are the only ones fond of these kinds of things, young men in Japan also like shopping and dressing up at Harajuku (Mead).…
