French Reading Pimsleur
Pimsleur – French I Reading has been defined as "decoding the graphic material to the phonemic patterns of spoken language which have already been mastered when reading is begun." To put it another way, reading consists of coming back to speech through the graphics symbols. In short, meanings reside in the sounds of the spoken language. Speaking a language is the necessary first step to acquiring the ability to read a language with meaning. The recorded portion of the reading materials will be found at the end of most units. Full instructions on how to proceed with the readings are contained in the audio portion of the course. The “reading war” has raged since the early 1930’s. What is the reading war and why is a “simple” thing such as learning to read and spell so controversial. Why, when Johnny sees the words “yellow pencil” can he color the bird yellow however, ask him to spell the word and he stares with a blank face and says (Y_I_L_O). Is this a byproduct of the wars or as people have hypothesized it is for the reason that Johnny comes from a “bad family.” This paper delves into the “Reading Wars” and discusses the two different and diametrically opposed sides in this war. The “whole language or whole word army” and “phonics forces”. How they came to be and their differences. This paper shows that, used properly and planned that they can indeed co-exist…

A couple of weeks ago, my sister and I went to the movie theater. After we had arrived we noticed that the movie we had originally picked was not being shown in this certain movie theatre. Just like Rainsford and General Zaroff my sister and I argued back and forth about what movie to watch. After some time my mother got very annoyed at both of us and said that if we did not choose a movie we would go back home. It was a long time before we finally reached a decision. That…

Assimilation is a term used in tandem with colonialism where it pertains to the French. It advocated a wholesale immersion onto the French culture by the natives, to the end of making Frenchmen out of them. This essay will discuss the impact of this French policy through the main character. I have chosen to focus on the character of Ramatoulaye as she is central to the plot of the novel, being both its narrator and principal character. She also has the unique position of being presented as having witnessed both colonial and post-colonial times. In addition to her narration, Bâ affords her times of reflection that give us further insight into societal pressures and issues of her era.…
