Flood light event
Flood light Box Cricket at PWC
The Panthaky Baug Welfare Center (PWC) flagged off their first ever floodlight Box Cricket Tournament at the colony grounds on 26th and 27th of October 2013.
The event saw an encouraging participation of 16 teams from various parsi groups across Mumbai, who were cheered from the stands by enthusiastic spectators bearing the scorching October heat along with the players. It was after a decade that PWC had organized such an encouraging event for the youth of our community, though the event had no restrictions set for the age of the players. The matches commenced on the evening of 26th on a well illuminated flood lit ground and continued till late in the evening of the following day. The afterhours timelines coupled with a week end holiday and the flood light experience were the main attributes to the significant turn around of spectators.
There were league matches for the initial elimination rounds played among the sixteen contesting teams that included teams from Contractor baug, Gamadia Colony, Gamadia hostel, Draggers and Bharucha Baug to site a few. The four teams that made it to the semi finals were Panthaky baug (team A), Malcolm baug (team A), Salsette Colony (team A) and Petit boys. Final match was played between Salsette Colony (team A) and Malcom Baug (team A) who eventually emerged as the winning side. Shahvir Afshari – captain of the Malcom Baug team said “It was good to see that some suburban colonies have started organizing more sporting events. This should continue every year and Panthky baug has done a great job by organizing to promote the theme of box cricket. Keep it up guys. These events like box cricket should be a frequent feature to promote new talent and Panthaky Baug has done its best to do the same. It was a smooth tournament well organized, keep it up guys”. Shahvir was also awarded the best player of the tournament award for his all round performance during the event.

Cricket today, as it has been said many times, is not what it used to be. Unfortunately many young West Indians know very little of what is once was and what it stood for, they take for granted the techniques and its origins. The level of West Indies cricket has been diluted due to the increase of tourism and fast paced games. However there are many West Indians who hold strong to the fact that cricket is part of our culture and heritage. This archipelago in the Americas has produced many fine cricketers throughout the years. The Caribbean is a unique multicultural and multiethnic region; the majority of the population was forced to migrate after the original inhabitants faced almost complete annihilation. The survivors were at no level to repopulate the Caribbean. As a result there was no previous pattern for the new comers to follow; they had to create their own. West Indians had to develop their own religion, food, politics, art and essentially their entire culture. Cricket was one such aspect, though not their own, over time they moulded and shaped it into what it is today. Cricket came to the West Indies via the English military that were deployed to defeat Napoleon’s west India project and to suppress uprisings, they played the game during their free time, which was relaxing and reminded them of home. The game was introduced as a means of portraying the high statute that was English. During the Victorian age the English empire was at its peak, it had expanded considerably and was proud of its successes, she deemed herself as superior in commerce, morals and race. At this time the only thing that was missing was cricket, Lord Harris, a colonial administrator saw cricket as a method of teaching discipline, loyalty and acceptance of decisions in order to consolidate the empire.…

At the same time that Shah Rukh Khan went cartwheeling at Chepauk and Sunil Gavaskar began praising the combative qualities of the Kolkata Knight Riders, a senior teacher at Delhi’s Modern School broke into a silent jig around his TV screen. A glow spreads across Firoz Bakht Ahmed’s face as he reflects on his illustrious student and rewinds the clock to 1995 when he taught Gautam Gambhir. “In class 8, Gambhir was lagging behind in English assignments and I called his dad to complain. His dad said his attendance was erratic because he was representing Delhi in cricket tournaments. It was then that I told him: ‘All this won’t matter if your son becomes the next Sunil Gavaskar.’”…

Bangladesh's first official foray into international cricket came in the 1979 ICC Trophy in England, leaving the tournament with 2 wins and 2 defeats. Seven years later, on 31 March 1986, Bangladesh played in its first ODI match against Pakistan in the 1986 Asia Cup. Cricket has gradually become very popular in urban areas of the country. Although football was the most popular game for a long time, cricket gained momentum and soon surpassed football, especially after Bangladesh won the 1997 ICC Trophy in Malaysia. By winning the tournament, Bangladesh qualified for the 1999 Cricket World Cup for the first time, where they defeated Pakistan, creating one of the biggest upsets in their cricketing history. In 1997, Bangladesh became a regular ICC member with the right to play ODIs. It attained the status of a Test playing country on 26 June 2000.…
