First Responders

We see them every day on the street in squad cars, fire engines, and ambulances. They are always on watch, being the first to respond to any emergency that falls on the general public. The first responders such as fire fighters, law enforcement, medical personnel, and utility workers each have a key role to play and often work in support of one another during terrorist attacks, attempting to suppress the disruption and widespread fear. In this essay, I will discuss the risks that first responders encounter while responding to terrorist attacks.
The duties of first responders often depend on the nature of the emergency in the wake of a terrorist attack. Law enforcement agents will take the lead ensuring the area is safe and secure by restoring public order. Emergency medical technicians would be responsible for administering first aid, transporting injured personnel, and coordinating with dispatchers and hospitals to establish triage stations giving the number of wounded. This essay will discuss the risks associated in two categories: WMD and other terrorism hazards. When encountering an attack using a WMD, first responders who do not have the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respiratory masks and chemical resistant suits. CBRN attacks all have similar indicators, unusual odors, fog clouds, or illness in large numbers. When encountering these indicators first responders should dawn proper PPE to minimize the effects of the CBRN being used.
