Final Reflection: My HSLI Journey

Final Reflection Nearing the completion of my HSLI journey, it is important to look back on everything I have learned and accomplished. From the one week spent at Wartburg college to finally creating the final portfolio, the process has been difficult to say the least. Keeping in touch with the friends I made was great, along with creating a friendship with the people I already knew from my hometown who also attended the institute. Many aspects of my project went well, even if some parts did not turn out the way I intended. Certainly there are things I would change had I the opportunity to do it all over again. Despite all this, my experiences were valuable to me growing as a person and readying me for my future at Wartburg College. My project was originally supposed to be a form of suicide and depression awareness including information for students at my school along with a type of safe room set up in various teachers’ rooms. After trial and error, asking my close friends and teachers how best to go about it, I decided upon an assembly to teach everyone in my school the truth of the matter. Depression and suicide are major issues at my high school, and I felt and still feel like it is not addressed enough. I got to meet new people, learn about service-learning projects and how they are beneficial to everyone involved, and create my own service-learning project that actually held meaning for me. If given the opportunity, I would do it all over again if it meant that I would be able to grow more as a person and leader in my community.
